BACK TO BASICS

viśokā vā jyotiṣmati
Concentration on the Divine produces lightness and self-confidence.

—The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (PYS I.36)

The Yoga Sutras are extremely compact. Each sutra (translated to thread), using the power of the Sanskrit language, is defined exactly with just enough words and often conveys a profound meaning requiring copious commentary.

This above sutra refers to a state of viśokā, a sorrow-less, grief-less state that's obtained by concentration on the Divine.

Viśokā can be understood as a state in which the mind is not focused on the day-to-day, moment-to-moment changing situations, which often produce anxiety, regret and many other afflictions. Focusing instead on the changeless, ever-present Divine state produces remarkably good results. A spiritual practitioner or aspiring yogi desires results such as a deep sense of peace, contentment, a lightness of being and confidence that we have something deeper and stronger we can tap into. That state of lightness is conducive for spiritual growth and knowledge.

It is important for a yogi to focus on the right substance because, over time, he or she will develop the qualities of that substance. Many yogis have warned us to be very selective about the things we focus and concentrate on, as well as the company that we keep. Shyamdas often taught the importance of satsang which means keeping good company. Good association is a key element for spiritual development. Anything that brings people together in an uplifting way to encourage contemplation can help guide us toward that path.

Divine things are rarely complicated. Things like compassion, feeling for others, our breath or appreciating a beautiful sunset or shade-giving tree are all simple things often taken for granted. Nature is full of things we can appreciate, all of which contribute to a Divine experience.

The human mind, however, is capable of elaborate complications! Given the right incentive, the mind can be trained to focus on the simple things. In the practice of yoga, that incentive is an immediate sense of the here and now. Some asanas seem very complicated mainly because we think of them in that way. If we break them down into the basic elements or a simple sequence, we are often amazed by our progress.

In Jivamukti Yoga, asana is defined as "seat" or "connection to the Earth." Divinity arises by realizing your true connection to the Earth. Through regular practice, we come to see that it's not just the physical connection, but our relationship with nature, animals and other human beings. Our entire existence is made up of relationships, so it is worth asking whether or not these relationships are Divine. Can we focus on the divinity in everything and everyone surrounding us? It is easier said than done. It's very easy to find fault in others and to see the fallibilities in them. We want them to be a certain way – our idea of perfection! If this person were like this, or did this, then I would be happy.

Sharon Gannon explains in her book Yoga and Vegetarianism that desiring happiness for ourselves is called greed and that Patanjali recommends yogis seeking enlightenment should try to live a simple life based on moderation rather than excessive consumption. She cites the very simple but powerful quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "Live simply so that others may simply live." The yoga practice is full of opportunities to return back to the basics. By choosing to concentrate our efforts on that which is simple we can illuminate what is profound.

ZURÜCK ZU DEN GRUNDLAGEN

viśokā vā jyotiṣmati
Die Konzentration auf das Göttliche führt zu Leichtigkeit und Selbstvertrauen.

—Yoga Sutras des Patanjali (PYS I.36)

La Gomera is dubbed the Island of Everlasting Spring guaranteeing perfect tropical climate and a great way to extend your summer while it is already getting cold again in mainland Europe.

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON ANJA KUEHNEL & MARTYNA EDER

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL
is director of the two Jivamukti Yoga Berlin centers and has been practicing and teaching Jivamukti Yoga for many years all over the world. Her inspiration comes from her teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life who opened up a way to access the yogic path and who made the ancient yogic techniques accessible and understandable in a modern, practical and relevant way by emphasizing the importance of a meaningful and mutually beneficial way of life with all of nature. It is the feeling of interconnectedness in one's own heart and the importance to deepen one's understanding through practice that inspires her every day as a student and teacher of yoga.

Anja especially is interested in the ancient yogic scriptures and vedantic teachings which offer a path to experiencing one's true nature as limitless and free by taking away all the limitations we have put upon ourselves.

In addition to her long time experience as a yoga teacher and yoga center director in Berlin, she is often teaching Jivamukti Yoga workshops worldwide and has been teaching Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreats worldwide for the past 7+ years, often in collaboration with internationally renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon, David Life, Manorama or Dechen Thurman.

Anja leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Yoga Apprenticeship Teacher Training program in Berlin and is regularly invited as faculty or board member to the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings and Jivamukti Advanced board tests. In June 2017, Anja will co-facilitate the 300-hour Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica together with Jivamukti Yoga co-founder David Life and Rima Rabbath (NYC).

Vera Christopeit MARTYNA EDER
is an 800hrs+ Advanced Certified Jivamukti Teacher and an actress. She graduated from the Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in Rhinebeck, New York, in 2011 and then apprenticed with her mentor Petros Haffenrichter. Since then, she has been teaching classes at Jivamukti Berlin and Jivamukti Munich as well as workshops and retreats all over the world. Martynas biggest inspiration is the tireless animal rights and environmental activism of her teachers, Sharon and David, which she makes her priority to pass on to her students by imparting a loving and compassionate behavior towards all living beings and by practicing nonviolence in thoughts, words and actions as the first- and most important step of all yoga practices. Martyna bows down in love and gratitude to her teachers Sharon Gannon, David Life, Petros Haffenrichter and Rolf Naujokat.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT CENTER AND ACCOMODATION

Anja KühnelTHE LOCATION:
Already for the 5th time in a row, we are returning to a very special and remote place right on a secluded private beach on the Atlantic, meaning that we can jump into the ocean directly after yoga and can take our meals right one the beach everyday.

Nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys of La Gomera, defined on both sides by hilly slopes, the finca expands down to a beach of 500 metres length.

It is an idyllic retreat with a magic of its own and many lively contrasts. There is the elemental force of nature – we are situated right by the Atlantic whose rushing waves make up the finca's "sound-track". In the morning, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea, in the evening the setting sun turns Mt. Teide on the neighbouring island Tenerife to gold – at 3718m it is Spain's highest mountain.

Italien

We will be staying in neatly restored old farmers' houses which were originally part of an old and remote banana plantation, that today has been converted to an organic farm which operates solely to provide the guests of the venue with fresh organic produce.

Italien

Surrounded by 10 hectars of organic plantation (actually the first recognized biological enterprise on La Gomera), most of the vegetables, herbs and fruits needed for feeding the guests are grown right on site. The hundreds of organically grown plants make sure that our fruit buffet is filled all year round with bananas, papayas, mangoes, mameys, dates, oranges, melons, avocados and strawberries – all these according to their different seasons. When the harvest surpasses the demand, juices and jams are produced.

We can eat outside during the entire retreat. One dining terrace is situated directly by the sea, the other one within the finca amongst mango trees and date palms. At mealtimes you help yourself to delicious dishes prepared by the Gomeran catering team with fresh products mainly from the Finca. Vegan dishes will be served throughout the week.

Italien

The vegetable garden supplies cucumber, tomatoes, courgettes, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, rucola, aubergines, pumpkins, green beans, red and green peppers, etc. More sensitive plants grow in our three large greenhouses.
This is only a small excerpt from the horticultural world of the finca. You can learn more about the history, the organisation, plants and trees on an optional botanical tour offered.

Italien

The best part, however, is the peaceful and remote location...the plantation can only be reached by boat or a 2 hour walk, which means that there are no roads, no hurry -- only the singing of birds, the whispering of the wind and the murmur of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Italien

The journey to the plantation, which with multiple boat rides is itself a lot of fun, easily affords time for reflection. Immerse yourself! Guests arrive and depart exclusively in our own launches – our workforce also travel in this manner. Since the only other way is a narrow path which leads hikers to San Sebastian in about 2 ½ hours we are protected from unbidden guests. There is no road access. This means, our guests and their children can move freely and safely around the large Finca. Because of its remote situation it has always been necessary to install all essentials. The development from plantation to holiday village has raised the standard but the self-sufficient character remained, on an equally high standard.

Shared 2-bed apartment                                                       +666 EUR p.P.
shared beautiful apartment with 2 single beds and its own bathroom and kitchen
Please inquire for single room/apartment options on the extension days.

As these optional extension days are also aimed at having some time to explore the island a bit more and/or to have some more time to relax, the group will decide on a day to day basis if there will be a 2nd class that day or whether we skip one of the daily classes. Food is also included for the extension days, HOWEVER, it will NOT be prepared buffet-style food.  Instead, if we are not on excursions, we as a entire group will cook and eat all our meals together as a group at our beautiful retreat headquarter house. This means JYB will buy and pay all groceries/food/drinks (vegan and non-alcoholic) needed to prepare delicious meals throughout the day, but there will be no designated cook nor maid onsite who will cook or do the dishes for us. So all retreat participants (teachers, students and staff alike) will do this together as a team effort and taking turns. Focus will be on fresh, tasty, healthy vegan food and we will bring Sharon Gannon's cookbook Recipes for Joy but everybody is welcome to come with their own recipe ideas. Preparing, offering and serving delicious food is a well known yoga practice in India and will form a integral part of this yoga retreat. If we are doing excursions/trips and stopping by a restaurant, everyone pays for their own restaurant bill.

▲▼ BIO UND MEHR INFOS ZU KINO MAC GREGOR

Kino MacGregorKINO MACGREGOR is one of a select group of people to receive the Certification to teach Ashtanga Yoga by its founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. The youngest woman to hold this title, she has completed the challenging Third Series and is now learning the Fourth Series.

Without any background in movement training Kino MacGregor tried her first yoga class when she was nineteen. Three years later, she joined Govinda Kai's Mysore-style classes in New York City and became a dedicated Ashtanga yoga practitioner. After seven months of traditional Ashtanga practice Kino traveled to Mysore, India to meet her true teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois ("Guruji"). Upon her return she began real self-practice by practicing alone and devoting herself entirely to the study and teaching of Ashtanga yoga. After seven years of consistent trips to Mysore, at the age of 29, she received from Guruji the Certification to teach Ashtanga yoga and has since worked to pass on the inspiration to practice to countless others.

After spending a major portion of her life actively engaged in personal growth work, Kino returned to Miami Beach to create a space dedicated to the integration of yoga, holistic health and consciousness. In 2006, she and her husband Tim Feldmann founded Miami Life Center, where they now teach daily classes, workshops and intensives together in addition to maintaining an international traveling and teaching schedule. Miami Life Center is a community built around yoga, holistic health and consciousness on Miami Beach www.miamilifecenter.com. She has produced three Ashtanga yoga DVDs (Kino MacGregor – A Journey, A Workshop; Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series; Ashtanga Yoga Intermediate Series), an Ashtanga yoga practice card and a podcast on yoga. She is currently working on one more DVDs and book about her personal experiences in yoga.

Kino is dedicated to carrying the torch of Ashtanga yoga throughout the world and sharing the amazing tradition of Ashtanga yoga with everyone who is inspired to practice. In her unique, inspirational and playful approach Kino helps all her students expand and deepen their understanding of yoga and life. Yoga found its expression through her message of spiritual strength, balanced flexibility and emotional peace.

Passionate about the environment, Kino pledges a monthly donation to Go Zero! to make her heavy travel schedule carbon neutral. As life coach and Ph.D. student in holistic health with a Master's Degree from New York University, Kino integrates her commitment to consciousness and empowerment with her yoga teaching. She has been featured in Yoga Journal, Yoga Mind Body Spirit, Yoga Joyful Living, Travel & Leisure Magazine, Ocean Drive Magazine, Boca Raton Magazine, Florida Travel & Life Magazine, Six Degrees Magazine as well as appearing on Miami Beach's Plum TV and the CBS Today Show.
