▲▼ DER AKTUELLE JIVAMUKTI FOCUS OF THE MONTH AUF ENGLISCH:

WHY ASANA?

A student recently wondered why in some Yoga traditions, such as the bhakti tradition, there is little or no emphasis on the practice of asana, yet in Jivamukti Yoga and most other contemporary Western Yoga disciplines, asana plays a major role. It is true that there are traditions that focus primarily on practices other than asana. There are four major paths of Yoga, all of which have the same goal—enlightenment, or the realization of the Oneness of being—but each of which has a different emphasis on how to reach the goal. Bhakti Yoga, the path of devotion, primarily emphasizes japa (repetition of the names of God), chanting and ritual. It is the practice of developing a personal relationship with God through which past karmas are purified. Some notable bhakti yogis include Neem Karoli Baba, Shyamdas, Krishna Das, Rumi and Mirabai. Jñana Yoga, the path of the intellect, primarily emphasizes meditation, scripture and Sanskrit study. It is centered on the question, "Who am I?" and the investigation of all possible answers to that question. Ultimately, the jñana yogi comes to the realisation that no answer that derives from the material, relative world can be correct, and all that is left is the true nature of reality. Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ramana Maharshi are jñana yogis. Karma Yoga, the path of selfless service, primarily emphasizes surrendering the results of actions to God—"not my will, but Thy will, be done." Through service to others, we come to see ourselves—and God—in the others, and the illusion of a separate self dissolves. It is said that if we could do one truly selfless action—an action entirely without ego—we would instantly attain enlightenment. Swami Sivananda and Mother Teresa are karma yogis. Raja Yoga, the path of the mind, is the eight-limbed path (or Ashtanga Yoga) described by Patanjali in The Yoga Sutra. It primarily emphasises observing and investigating the mind's tendencies and characteristics and ultimately training ourselves to shift our identity away from the fluctuations of the mind, at which point we realize the Oneness of being. Sri Krishnamacharya and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois are both raja yogis. In the early twentieth century, Sri Aurobindo taught that the four paths of Yoga could be integrated, drawing on the practices of all four paths, not only to raise the practitioner's consciousness and lead to enlightenment, but to bring positive change to the world as well. Jivamukti Yoga is such an integrated system of Yoga.

Asana is considered to be a practice of Raja Yoga, but asana actually underlies all types of Yoga. To practice Yoga you must be incarnated—meaning living in a physical body. The bhakta chants with her heart and voice, which are part of her body; the jñani sits and meditates while in a body; and the karma yogi certainly performs his compassionate actions by means of his body. Asana pertains to our relationship with the Earth and all others, and our means of relating to others is physical. The practice of asana can bring us directly to enlightenment because the only thing that stands between us and enlightenment is our perception of ourselves and others. The karmas generated by our interactions with others are stored in the tissues of our bodies—in fact, our karmas actually make up our bodies—so moving the body through asana practice has the effect of purifying our karmas, helping us feel more comfortable in our bodies and in our relationships with others, and ultimately leads to freedom and liberation.

Looking at human history we see that as civilization and organised religions gained power so did prejudices against others. Two of the oldest such prejudices, misogyny (hate for women) and speciesism (hate for animals), revolve around a negative view of the physical body, treating it as if it represented a fall from grace and must be tamed, degraded or beaten into shape. Over time, we human beings have become more and more disconnected from the Earth, our physical bodies and our own place among other animals. We tend to see ourselves as a special case and arrogantly strive to disassociate ourselves from the physicality of animals. This has led us to the mistake of thinking that how we live and how we treat the Earth and other beings has no adverse consequence for ourselves, other beings or the Earth.

Looking at the history of Yoga, over time the practices had to become more and more detailed or refined in order to address our own escalating sense of alienation from life. The earliest writings about happiness, realization, living in harmony, knowing God and knowing Self seem to us now very idealistic, very philosophical and very difficult for people in the present time to understand and put into practice. For example, The Rig Veda teaches, "Who knows this? No one knows." Most of us needed a little more direction than that. So the teachings of the Vedas were distilled in The Upanishads and are presented as narratives, stories and parables. Many people still needed more concrete instruction than that, and eventually we got The Yoga Sutra and The Bhagavad Gita, much of which we can relate to even now, but much of which still strikes us as abstract. Then in the Middle Ages came The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, which gives detailed instruction for fifteen asanas, among many other practices. It seems that as time has passed, it has become more and more difficult to comprehend the mystery of life in the age of conflict, the Kali Yuga. Traditionally a seeker would find a teacher who would perhaps give the seeker one mantra, which if recited devotedly with faith in the teacher could lead to enlightenment. These days, few of us have that kind of faith in a teacher or in a mantra. So we could say that our bodies—physical, energetic, mental and emotional—have become dulled; we've lost our sensitivity, our ability to perceive subtlety. We've given up a lot to live a "civilized" life. Asana practice has the power to sharpen our senses and restore us to our natural state—the state of unity with all of existence, the state of eternal joy.

▲▼ DER AKTUELLE JIVAMUKTI FOCUS OF THE MONTH AUF DEUTSCH:

WARUM ASANA?

In 1984 she shifted her main focus from the performing arts to teaching yoga in the hope of giving practical methods that would benefit people more directly and immediately. Sharon has studied yoga since 1976 with many teachers around the globe, most notably with Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalanada, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Shankarananda, Shyam Das and Bhagavan Das. She brings a rare blend of scholarly study, artistic pursuits and a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her offerings as a teacher.

DAVID LIFE: Bios are hard for me to digest. The idea that a picture could be painted of me with some little list of factoids is untenable. The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers. Sometimes I like to read bios because it tells me things about a person that I didn't know and to that end, here is a list of all the significant jobs that have come my way over the past 60 years, in order: Lawnmowing and snowshoveling, Paper delivery, Beer and Wine store stockboy, Forklift driver in Corrugated box company, Phone order taker, Dishwasher, Cafeteria manager, Welder in Steel MIll, Apartment building super, Silk screen production and designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Artist, Poet, Life Cafe owner, Yoga teacher, Bio writer!

JIVAMUKTI YOGA, founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, is one of the fastest growing and most highly regarded modern approaches to the ancient art of yoga. Both have certified hundreds of students to teach the Jivamukti method through the intense one month residential 300 hour Teacher Training course which is offered each year in the US, Costa Rica and/or Europe/India. With their Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga", "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism", "Cats and Dogs are People, too!", "Simple Recipes for Joy", Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL has been a devoted student of Sharon Gannon and David Life since she first met them while temporarily living in New York. She has been directing the two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers and their Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training program since 2008. After 15 years of study with Sharon and David, Anja is more than grateful for all she has learned and all that she is still going to learn. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. She teaches at her two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin.

"The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers." - David Life

Everyone is talking about Sharon & David's Jivamukti Yoga method….
“Sharon Gannon und David Life who founded their own yoga method called Jivamukti Yoga in the late 80ies and, with it, made Yoga for the first time ever socially acceptable for western urban dwellers. Among their students are Sting, Madonna, Christy Turlington and basically all other non-overweight famous american actors and musicians. Many speak about them as Gurus. With their mixture of old Indian tradition and modern lifestyle like rock music they were the ones who were majorly responsible for the Yoga boom, which from New York has long spilled over to Germany: Three million Germans are said to regularly practice Yoga these days ... in Berlin-Mitte it appear to be two million alone.'
--Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Germany
"David Life looks like Iggy Pop, is widely tatooed, has an incredible power in his stringy tiny arms and the great luck to have a woman on his side who has a delphine blue streak in her black hair and who is radiating a mild wisdom that makes one want to start crying immediately as soon as she opens her mouth. With their headsets, the two contrive to get every hall to boil.... – Oh My Guru!"
--DIE WELT, Germany
“..holistic vision extending to strict vegetarianism and hard-core animal rights activism'
--Vanity Fair USA
“David and Sharon have inspired and encouraged us to think of yoga not just as a system of exercises but also as a door to the infinite.”
--Sting
"It has the full package, more than just exercise. I always learn something at Jivamukti; they really educate the students."
-- Christy Turlington
“Without Sharon and David, yoga in the US would still be the obscure practice of a few devotees.”
--The New York Times, USA
“The pioneers of yoga in the United States, inspire us to appreciate life’s depth and breadth.”

Wild Woodstock Retreat

OUR LOCATION FOR THE YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS:
Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life open part of their home in Woodstock, NY (USA) for this special retreat. Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary which also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all yoga classes and events of this retreat will be held.

The Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary is a magical 125-acre sanctuary established in 2003 and located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains near Woodstock in upstate New York (about 2 hours north of New York City and 3.5 miles from downtown Woodstock).

The Sanctuary serves as a safe haven and unpolluted habitat for diverse plant and animal communities, including white tail deer, black bear, foxes, porcupines, possums, raccoons, turkeys, as well as a large variety of wild birds, fish, snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In present culture, the word wild is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized," but the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others." The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness—to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully.

Sharon Gannon often teaches that we can have anything we want so long as we are willing to provide it to others first. She and David Life live that teaching by having established and by maintaining the Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary, which is the country ashram for the Jivamukti Yoga School.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

YOUR ACCOMMODATION DURING THIS RETREAT will be provided in handpicked high quality properties/houses in the Woodstock area. All houses are shared (2 to 5 twin/double or single rooms in one property), i.e. you will share a common living area, a fully equipped self-catered kitchen and 1 to 3 bathrooms with up to 4-10 other retreat participants (depending on the size of the house, number of single rooms booked etc.). All properties and rooms are individual with their special treats so it is hard to compare them. We also offer a number of optional upgrades to the standard accommodation to better suit your individual requirements. Check registration form for details.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

BOARD DURING THIS REATREAT: All houses come with well equipment self-catered kitchens and are strictly vegan, i.e. no diary, egg or meat products may be brought into any of the houses.  The idea of this retreat is to also create a Satsang experience by cooking together delicious vegan meals in groups of likeminded vegan yogis. All houses will be equipped with a copy of Sharon Gannon’s cookbook “Simple Recipes for Joy”. For days/nights out, there are also some very nice vegan restaurants in Woodstock.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

BEING WILD, the underlying theme of this first of its kind retreat, in present culture, is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized". But the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others". The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness - to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully. Reaching this state actually requires the oposite of "chaos" and "disorganization": A regular intensive yoga practice, not only asana wise but also by studying the other legs of yoga and having satsang with other like minded yogis and most importantly, your teachers.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

This is why we have designed this one of a kind Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreat in Woodstock in order to provide you the opportunity to immerse for up to two weeks in intensive dalily study and practice right from the source with the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method. Every morning of this retreat, Sharon Gannon and/or David Life will teach a 4 hour intensive Jivamukt Yoga workshop from 10am to 2pm (ca. 3 hour asana practice and ca. 1 hour yoga philosophy teachings). These workshop style morning classes will be complemented by daily 2hour Jivamukti Yoga Open XL classes with Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel and occassionally also other international Jivamukti Yoga teachers in the late afternoon and, occasionally Satsangs, Kirtans and other special events with Sharon Gannon, David Life, Anja Kuehnel and other presenters.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Special Bonus Events: Approximately 1-2 times per week, we hope to offer special events in the late afternoon/evening, such as Satsangs or Kirtans or Yoga Philosophy lectures with Sharon Gannon, David Life and other presenters, which in some cases due to time constraints will be offered INSTEAD of the afternoon Open XL class (i.e. sometimes no Open XL class on special events days). Once during each of the two weeks of this retreat, we invite you to a Karma Yoga session to benefit the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary area. Exact daily schedule TBA at the retreat venue.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Please note for your planning: On the arrival days there is NO morning class nor Q&A conference with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life, i.e. the first class on your arrival day is the afternoon class with Anja. This also applies if your arrival day is August 23 even though Sharon and David teach on this day in the morning, as this class is only for the people who also booked Part I of the retreat. On August 22 and 30 (final days), there is no evening class with Anja, last class on August 22 and 30 is the morning workshop with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life from 10am-2pm. If you booked both weeks, August 22 in the evening and August 23 in the morning provides a welcome opportunity to take "a day off" and explore Woodstock and its surroundings. For instance, you could visit Ananda Ashram or the Farm Sanctuary. Or go swimming.

As normal with renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life, the practice space included in this retreat strictly is the size of one regularly sized yoga mat (ca. 0,65x1,8m) only. All practice spots are marked and mats must be placed within the markers. You should bring your own yoga mat as there are only a limited number of rental mats. The yoga room has blankets and straps for your use. It also has a limited number of blocks. If you anticipate using blocks, please bring your own, as we cannot guarantee to have enough for everyone.

Accept us both together, protect us both together, may our knowledge and strength increase together, may we not resent each other.

Dear ones,

I am thanking all of you for making an effort to create the time and space to be together! We hold precious and dear in our hearts whatever we put our energy into. It is 100% up to us. Life is pulling us in all these different directions. It is wonderful that we are all meeting here at Sharon ji's and David ji's beautiful home and at the sanctuary they have created for the animals, plants and us human people, and that all of us together get the chance to immerse into our practice in this beautiful natural environment which is supporting us on all levels.
Let us put all of our love into what we do! Let us always remind each other that this is what truly matters in life. To uplift each other, to enjoy each other's company, to learn from each other, to see the beauty in each moment and to be grateful for the gift of life. Putting our prāṇa in what we truly care about: to be as natural and loving as one can possibly be, taking rest in our true nature, to truly be free and to serve with each breath.

लोका: समस्ता: सुखिनो भवन्तु ।।
May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Love.
Anja

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON DECHEN THURMAN & ANJA KUEHNEL

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL
is director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher. She discovered her passion for Jivamukti Yoga in 2000 while temporarly living in New York. Back then, she also met her teachers Sharon Gannon & David Life for the first time. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. Anja has also been a long time student of Manorama. She teaches at the Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Center, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin.

Dechen Thurman DECHEN THURMAN
He's the brother of Uma and the son of Robert. He played Guildenstern in Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" movie and Patrick Bateman in Gerald Fox' Bret Easton Ellis film. But more importantly, his unique form of bodywork - as in Yoga and massage - has won international praise in the last couple of years.

Dechen is a holistic healer based in New York City. He is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher at the New York Jivamukti Yoga School as well as a Certified Ohashiatsu Instructor. Dechen creates a delicious sense of playfulness in his yoga classes. His method of healing is derived from these revered schools.

Last summer, more than 200 yogis in one of the biggest Open-Air Yoga classes at the Berlin Yoga Festival were hooked by his teachings (despite the fact that Germany played the semi-final of the soccer world cup at the same time; cf. the article in the German Vital magazine here). This year, he is invited, among others, to teach at the New York Yoga Journal Conference, the Yoga Conference Germany and the Wanderlust Yoga Festival.

Growing up, Dechen's family was a multicultural pioneer in hosting such luminous Tibetan refugee scholars as Geshe Wangyal, Lama Govinda, Tara Tulku Rimpoche, Dr. Yeshe Donden and Gehlek Rimpoche. A paramount time in Dechen’s life as he learned to cultivate his meditation practice with the help of these brilliant scholars. He first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age seven in Dharamsala, India.

Dechen's first taste of Jivamukti Yoga came at the age of nineteen. His dance teacher at Playwrights Horizons, Maude Karlsonn (nicknamed the "Swedish Mistress of Pain" by classmates), gave him a flier with a photo of Sharon Gannon in side crow position and told him to go to 2nd ave. and practice there. It was love at first class. He frequently attended class, initially as a warm-up for acting rehearsals, later for refuge from the pressures of his identity. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism. Many inexplicably good things would happen to him on such a punctual basis associated with Jivamukti that his life literally depended on it. The psychospiritual investigation that Jivamukti stimulated was fundamental to his success in acting and massage. Alongside his work as a Jivamukti Yoga teacher and healer, Dechen is an accomplished actor in film and theater. He has appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Hamlet, Zoolander and Gods and Generals.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT CENTER AND ACCOMODATION

Anja KühnelTHE LOCATION:
Already for the 3rd time in a row, we are returning to a very special and remote place right on a secluded private beach on the Atlantic, meaning that we can jump into the ocean directly after yoga and can take our meals right one the beach everyday.

Nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys of La Gomera, defined on both sides by hilly slopes, the finca expands down to a beach of 500 metres length.

It is an idyllic retreat with a magic of its own and many lively contrasts. There is the elemental force of nature – we are situated right by the Atlantic whose rushing waves make up the finca's "sound-track". In the morning, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea, in the evening the setting sun turns Mt. Teide on the neighbouring island Tenerife to gold – at 3718m it is Spain's highest mountain.

Italien

We will be staying in neatly restored old farmers' houses which were originally part of an old and remote banana plantation, that today has been converted to an organic farm which operates solely to provide the guests of the venue with fresh organic produce.

Italien

Surrounded by 10 hectars of organic plantation (actually the first recognized biological enterprise on La Gomera), most of the vegetables, herbs and fruits needed for feeding the guests are grown right on site. The hundreds of organically grown plants make sure that our fruit buffet is filled all year round with bananas, papayas, mangoes, mameys, dates, oranges, melons, avocados and strawberries – all these according to their different seasons. When the harvest surpasses the demand, juices and jams are produced.

We can eat outside during the entire retreat. One dining terrace is situated directly by the sea, the other one within the finca amongst mango trees and date palms. At mealtimes you help yourself to delicious dishes prepared by the Gomeran catering team with fresh products mainly from the Finca. Vegan dishes will be served throughout the week.

Italien

The vegetable garden supplies cucumber, tomatoes, courgettes, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, rucola, aubergines, pumpkins, green beans, red and green peppers, etc. More sensitive plants grow in our three large greenhouses.
This is only a small excerpt from the horticultural world of the finca. You can learn more about the history, the organisation, plants and trees on an optional botanical tour offered.

Italien

The best part, however, is the peaceful and remote location...the plantation can only be reached by boat or a 2 hour walk, which means that there are no roads, no hurry -- only the singing of birds, the whispering of the wind and the murmur of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Italien

The journey to the plantation, which with multiple boat rides is itself a lot of fun, easily affords time for reflection. Immerse yourself! Guests arrive and depart exclusively in our own launches – our workforce also travel in this manner. Since the only other way is a narrow path which leads hikers to San Sebastian in about 2 ½ hours we are protected from unbidden guests. There is no road access. This means, our guests and their children can move freely and safely around the large Finca. Because of its remote situation it has always been necessary to install all essentials. The development from plantation to holiday village has raised the standard but the self-sufficient character remained, on an equally high standard.

Lisa Buddrus LISA BUDDRUS + TEAM

IMAGINE! Flaxseedcracker, raw Buckwheat bread, raw granola made of Sprouted buckwheat dehydrated, seeds, dried apple and dried fruits, fresh raw jam made with chia and frozen berries, cashew cream, raw hummus with sprouted chickpeas and zucchini, fresh yoghurt from almond mill, zucchini lasagne with tomato-walnut bolognese, avocado chocolat mousse, carrot cake, lukewarm chickpea pumpkin salad with tahin lemon dressing, cashew cake, quinoa salad with sundried tomatoes, olives and grilled eggplant, banana berry icecream .... to name just a few....

THE 2016 JIVAMUKTI YOGA SOUTH AFRICA INTENSIVE RETREAT
Jivamukti Venice Retreat

Join DECHEN THURMAN (Jivamukti School NYC) & ANJA KÜHNEL (Director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin) for THE 2016 JIVAMUKTI YOGA SOUTH AFRICA INTENSIVE RETREAT. From the two countries where Jivamukti Yoga is most popular, two Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teachers are joining forces for their 2nd South Africa retreat making this their already 12th retreat collaboration within the last six years. But this retreat promises to be extra special in many ways. Not only because it leads us to the two main attractions of this great country. But also because it will be Dechen's and Anja's 2nd ever "boutique style" retreat for a strictly limited mini-group of max. 6-15 participants only (depending on how many single rooms are booked). With two top teachers of the Jivamukti lineage there for you, you will enjoy a super good students per teacher ratio. Both locations for this retreat were scouted and hand picked by us on our prior trips to South Africa for their maximum compatibilty with yogic travel and yogic lifestyle. This means they are of a very high quality standard but still very much back to nature, eco-friendly and most importantly also quite remote, laid back and off the grid to enable us to really retreat and immerse into African nature and wildlife accompanied by specially tailored Jivamukti Yoga classes and workshops and more.

CAPE TOWN BEACH: Mon., 07.03.2016 - Sun., 13.03.2016

KRUEGER NATIONAL PARK: Sun., 13.03.2016 - Fri., 18.03.2016 (optional extension until 20.03.2016)

Please note: It is essential to book this "boutique style" retreat ASAP in advance because we are strictly limited to 6-15 people (depending on room choice). Also, currently flights are still quite affordable (ca. 650 EUR from Berlin with BA, Air France etc.).

There is a special super early bird discount of up to 360 EUR if you book by October 31, 2016 AND fully pay within 3 working days of receipt of our invoice. But make sure to book early in any case as this is a boutique style mini retreat and we can only take 6-15 people max. So it might already be sold out before the end of the early bird discount.

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFORMATION ON THE TEACHERS: ANJA KÜHNEL + DECHEN THURMAN

anja Kuehnel dechen thurman retreat

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL
Anja Kuehnel is director of the two Jivamukti Yoga Berlin centers and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher. She leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Yoga Apprenticeship Teacher Training program in Berlin and is regularly invited as faculty or board member at the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings and Jivamukti Advanced board tests. In addition to her long time practice as a yoga teacher and yoga center director in Berlin, she is also often teaching Jivamukti Yoga workshops worldwide and has been teaching Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreats all over Europe for the past more than 6 years, often in collaboration with internationally renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon, David Life, Manorama or Dechen Thurman.

Anja discovered her passion for Jivamukti Yoga in 2000 while living in New York. Back then, she also met her teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life for the first time. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew right after her first Jivamukti class, where she belongs.

Living as a Yogi means for Anja means to try to balance the disequilibrium between herself as part of human civilization and the world as a whole. In her classes, Anja strives to emphasize the yogic tenet that none of our doings, whether they remain thoughts or are actually carried out, are without impact to our surroundings. The direction, in which the world turns, is in the hands of each and every one of us.

The love of life, of all beings, and this world as a whole are what motivate Anja to teach yoga. The path of yoga gives every single one of us the chance to grapple with our inner selves and to find the harmony within us that we are longing for.

Anja thanks her teachers Sharon Gannon, David Life and Patrick Broome, and all the other teachers she encounters every day

Dechen Thurman BIO DECHEN THURMAN

▲▼ MORE INFORMATION ON THE KAPSTADT-PART OF THE RETREAT (7.3.-13.3.2016)

Jivamukti Yoga South Africa südafrika Retreat

The first 6 days of our retreat are designed for us to arrive in Africa, to detox and to enjoy. We will spend them on one of the most beautiful, unspoilt and nature-rough surfer beaches south of Cape Town that is still within a very easy distance to the city and to the main attractions sourrounding it, including the famous Penguin beach, Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost tip of Africa etc.

Jivamukti Yoga South Africa südafrika Retreat

Our base will be a luxury beach front house (just 10 meters stumbling down the dunes to the beach) and we will practice yoga every morning and evening on the deck or directly on the beach, looking right onto the ocean in front of us and on famous Chapman Peak in the distance. We will wake up to the sound of the waves and, during the day, you can choose to go swimming, to walk for kilometers on the unspoilt beach or to go with us on little tours to Cape Town and the nearby attractions.

Jivamukti Yoga South Africa südafrika Retreat

Dechen and Anja will teach one intensive 2 to 3 hour Jivamukti asana class each morning and evening. These will be intensive, in-depth workshop style classes with changing themes and focuses, where we will explore and experience different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga (asanas, kriyas, pranayama, yoga history). Also, each morning there will be led meditations and every other evening satsang, meditation, kirtan or yoga philosophy discussions, which will sometimes happen at our basecamp beach house but often also at specific spots in nature or Cape Town.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

Once or twice during this week, Dechen Thurman will teach a workshop in the city of Cape Town in a local yoga studio which will be a great excuse for the group to spend the day and evening out in the city before and after class and meet fellow South African yogis. The rather short drive from our little fishing village to Cape Town city (ca. 45mins) is on one of the most beautiful routes of Africa, the famous Chapman Peak drive.

Jivamukti Yoga South Africa Retreat

Every day during the day, (which ist in between the yoga classes ;), we will decide among the group where to go on a nice little adventure/sightseeing tour. This of course is always optional, so if you rather prefer to stay on the beach at our beautiful beach house, no problem. But there is really so much cool stuff to discover in and around Cape Town. For instance, we definately will have to go to the famous Penguin beach and try to swim with the penguins. Other not to be missed highlights are the Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain.

▲▼ MORE INFORMATION ON THE SAFARI PART OF THE RETREAT (13.03.-18.03.2016)

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

The 2nd part of our retreat, we will spend in one of the most back to nature safari lodges we could find in the Greater Kruger National Park area. We will immerse into Africa's most beautiful and exciting nature and wildlife and still are able to keep up our regular daily Jivamukti Yoga practice.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

The day here starts really early with fruits and snacks for breakfast in the dark. Then, right before sunrise, we start off with our first daily safari tour.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

On these 2 daily tours, which are ca. 2 hours each, we are - over the course of our days here - almost guaranteed that we will get really close to the so called Big 5 animal beings of Africa (and many more smaller ones).

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

After our morning safari, we have our main yoga workshop of the day on the platform of the camp overlooking the riverbed and waterhole where we might see wild animals passing by for a sip during class.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

After brunch, you may just relax and hang out at the pool, read or take part in another optional pranayama or meditation session, which could also be a walking meditation through the bush.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

Before dawn, we go on our 2nd daily safari tour. After dinner, there will be oportunities for Satsang, discussions, star gazing etc. with your teachers.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

The beauty of the special eco-safari bush camp we picked for this retreat is that it is both rustic and back to nature but also very exclusive and comfortable. The totally unfenced (yes, animals often wander through the camp) and off the grid (everything is lit by candlelight) location will help us to truly "retreat" into nature.

▲▼ MORE DETAILED INFORMATION ON PROGRAM, ACCOMODATION AND BOARD/FOOD

ACCOMMODATION, BOARD, FOOD AND YOGA SERVICES INCLUDED IN THE RETREAT:
The 2016 Jivamukti South Africa Intensive Retreat includes all yoga, and safari activities as described here and the accommodation and food/board as described below. It DOES NOT INCLUDE AIR TRANSPORTATION to, from and within South Africa (that means also not the airfare from Capetown to Krueger National Park if you combine both parts of the trip). These will have to be booked and paid by you seperately. We are not a travel agency, but we can certainly suggest you some good travel options. Please also check the travel section below. And better double check your actual flight dates and prices with us before actually booking your flights.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

CAPE TOWN PART: Arrival day is Monday, March 7, 2016. There will be ONE joint complimentary group shuttle transport from Cape Town Airport to our beach house headquarter which takes ca. 45-60 mins and will be timed so that we arrive there by checkin time at 3pm at the latest. See details in the travel info section below.

Our accommodation will be as described above in a luxury beachfront house ca. 45mins south of Cape Town. The house has queen size double bed rooms with ensuite bathrooms (two rooms share one bathroom). Two retreat participants will have to share one of these bedrooms AND one queen size bed unless you book a single room upgrade. Check the registration form for details and pricing.

During the Cape Town part, Anja and/or Dechen will teach one intensive 2-3 hour Jivamukti asana class each morning and afternoon/early evening. These will be intensive, in-depth workshop style classes with changing themes and focuses, where we will explore and experience different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga (asanas, kriyas, pranayama, yoga history). Before the morning classes, led meditations will be offered and every other afternoon/evening we offer satsang, meditation, kirtan or yoga philosophy lectures. On arrival day (07.03.16) one shorter class/welcome Satsang only and on departure day (13.03.16) no program as we have to be at the airport really early to go to Krueger National park. One or two of the yoga classes will be held at a yoga studio in Cape Town city together with other local South African yogis (transportation provided by JYB). The course language will be English; Anja and Dechen teach their classes in English but Anja also speaks German for individual questions and assists.

Other activities during the day can be all kinds of beach fun (swimming, walking, sunbathing even surfing lessens with the local surf school) or just relaxing. Among the group we will decide for almost every day where to do a little excursion to during the day (in-between the yoga classes), for instance Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain, Penguin Beach and so on. These are optional. Transportation will be provided by JYB unless you chose the rental car discount. Entrance fees, if charged, as well as food on these excursions is not included and will have to be paid by you.

If we are not on excursions, we as a entire group will cook and eat all our meals together as a group at our beautiful retreat headquarter house by the beach. This means JYB will buy and pay all groceries/food/drinks (vegan and non-alcoholic) needed to prepare delicious meals throughout the day, but there will be no designated cook onsite who will cook or do the dishes for us. So all retreat participants (teachers, students and staff alike) will do this together as a team effort and taking turns. Focus will be on fresh, tasty, healthy vegan food and we will bring Sharon Gannon's cookbook Recipes for Joy but everybody is welcome to come with their own recipe ideas. Preparing, offering and serving delicious food is a well known yoga practice and will form a integral part of this yoga retreat. JYB will hire one maid to help the group with preparation and dishes while and after cooking.

If we are doing excursions/trips to the city and stopping by a restaurant, everyone pays for their own restaurant bills. This includes the one or two times we will be out in the city of Cape Town for yoga class and probably also dinner in town.

Jivamukti South Africa Retreat

SAFARI PART:

The Safari camp we chose is also of very high standard but it is at the same time very special in that it is intentionally off the grid (yes, generally no electricity but you can charge your phones etc.) and, therefore, intentionally very down to earth representing a rustic-deluxe bush-camp style. The rooms are in comfortably-fitted huts with en-suite bathrooms and an ensuite private but open-air bush shower, white mosquito nets, crisp white linen and towels as well as with standard bathroom amenities, and insect repellent.

During the safari part, three daily vegan meals  will be cooked and served for us by our local African chef and her team onsite. This includes a smaller earlier breakfast before the morning game drive and class, a nice brunch after the yoga class and a candlelight/oil-lamp dinner in the evening after the 2nd safari drive plus tea and cake time in the afternoon. No cooking/dishwashing duties during this part of the retreat.

On the Safari part of this retreat, Anja and Dechen will co-teach one intensive 2.5-3 hour Jivamukti asana class each morning after the morning safari drive. These will be intensive, in-depth workshop style classes with changing themes and focuses, where we will explore and experience different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga (asanas, kriyas, pranayama, yoga history). Due to our intensive interaction with nature and wildlife (two daily safari drives and/or walks) and having to get up really early, the 2nd session of the day, which will be offered in the afternoon and/or evening, will be optional and will mostly be restorative, pranayama, satsang, (walking) meditation etc. On arrival day (13.03.16) one shorter class/welcome Satsang only and on departure day (18.03.16) shorter morning class only.

Other activities mainly consist of two super exciting led safari bush drives and/or bush walks of ca. 2 hours each. On one or two nights, you can also choose to spend the night out in the bush in a tree house (optional). During the day when there is no class and no other activities, you can enjoy and relax in hammocks by the pool or watch the wildlife from the platform.

▲▼ MORE INFORMATION ON TRAVEL, SHUTTLES ETC.

Travel/Transportation relating to the Cape Town part of the retreat: Please note that, if not listed otherwise below, all arrival and departure arrangements are to be booked and paid individually and are not included in the retreat price. This includes namely all air travel to South Africa and back and also any transportation from the airport to the retreat location, except for the following which is included in the retreat price:

  1. One joint arrival shuttle to our beach house on arrival day leaving at ca. 12-2pm from Cape Town airport with an optional stop at Cape Town city for people who arrived earlier and went to the city. This shuttle does not apply to you if you have chosen the rental car discount. The actual shuttle time will be determined once we know everybody's arrival times and it means that you will have to wait longer or not so long for this group shuttle. If you arrive later than ca. 12-2pm, you might not be able to go on this joint transfer shuttle, but we will then quote you a reasonable price for a transfer just for you. Same if you arrive very early and don't want to wait and come down to our beach house earlier.
  2. One joint departure shuttle leaving from our beach house to Cape Town airport in time for the people who also booked the Safari part to be able to catch the 9:10am direct flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit. This shuttle does not apply if you have chosen the rental car discount. If you leave much later than that, we can quote you a reasonable price for a transfer just for you. But latest checkout on 13.03. is at 11am.
  3. Minivan service on all (optional) excursions that we as a group decide to do during the retreat unless you have chosen the rental car discount.

Travel/Transportation relating to the Safari part of the retreat: Please note that, if not listed otherwise below, all arrival and departure arrangements are to be booked and paid individually and are not included in the retreat price. This includes namely all air travel to South Africa and back and also any transportation from the airport to the retreat location, except for the following which is included in the retreat price:

  1. All safari game drives.
  2. Arrival shuttle service from Hoedspruit (HDS) airport at any time of the day, but try to arrive by 12:30 on arrival day (March 13), if possible; shuttle takes ca. 1 hour.
  3. One joint departure shuttle service from Johannesburg Airport leaving on arrival day (March 13) at 6:45am sharp (or 6:30-7:30 from hotels within 5km of the airport); shuttle takes ca. 5 hours
  4. One joint departure shuttle service leaving on departure day (March 18 or 20) at 10am to either Johannesburg (5hours) or Hoedspruit Airport (ca. 1 hour)

Namely, this means that if you book both parts of the retreat with us, you still also have to book and pay your flight from Cape Town (CPT) to Hoedspruit (HDS) yourself. We recommend to book direct flight SA1241 (South African Airlines) leaving at 9:10am from CPT, which, as a one way, currently costs ca. 180 EUR. If you are doing both parts of the retreat, it usually is best to book an open leg overseas flight ticket (arriving in Capetown and leaving from Johannesburg). Then try via your travel agency/booking website if you can maybe make a multi-leg flight out of this and include the leg CPT-HDS and see how much more it is. Could be cheaper like this depending on which airline you book. Do double check your flight itinerary with us before booking. We also offer a flight research service for you, finding you a cheap flight.

SUGGESTION FOR YOUR FLIGHT TIMES:
To summarize,

(1) If you want to do both parts of the retreat, try to book a flight that gets you into Cape Town airport by ca. noon on March 7th and a flight that takes you back home from Johannesburg in the late evening on March 18/20 or from Hoedspruit in the early afternoon of March 18/20. Plus also try to get the 9:10am one -way flight from CPT to HDS on March 13 into your ticket.

(2) If you only want to do the Cape Town part of the retreat, try to book a flight that gets you into Cape Town airport by ca. noon on March 7th and a flight that takes you back home from Cape Town at 9:30am or later.

(3) If you only want to do the Safari part of the retreat, try to book a flight that gets you into Johannesburg airport (JNB) by 5:00am on March 13 and a flight that takes you back home from Johannesburg in the late evening on March 18/20 or from Hoedspruit in the early afternoon of March 18/20.

Of course, these are only the optimum flight times. If you cannot book these, we can always suggest you alternative options, like special shuttles or Airport hotels. So best, double check with us on the options before booking your flight.

PRE-RETREAT WORKSHOPS WITH DECHEN AND/OR ANJA IN CAPE TOWN AND POST-RETREAT WORKSHOPS WITH DECHEN IN JOHANNESBURG:
Dechen and/or Anja will teach open to the public pre-retreat workshops at local yoga studios in Cape Town the weekend before the retreat (March 4/6/7) and in Johannesburg the weekend after the retreat (March 19/20). So, you could also opt to arrive a few days earlier in Cape Town and/or stay a few days longer in Johannesburg on your own and check out the local yoga scene and/or take classes with Dechen and/or Anja together with local South African yogis. This could either be organized on your own or you could book our extensions package for the weekend after the retreat and stay two nights longer, either with Anja and Christian on Safari, or with Dechen in Johannesburg.

TRIP CANCELATION AND TRAVEL INSURANCE: Since we have to charge you a cancellation fee in case you cannot come to the retreat due to illness or similar causes (details see registration form), we advise you to book a Trip Cancelation Insurance for this retreat, which you can do by clicking clicking here (less than 100 EUR; one of the three best travel insurers as of a German consumer tests institute)

=> unfortunately the insurance booking form is only in German. Drop us an email and we can help you with booking the insurance for you.
