SERENE INTELLIGENCE

Mayy eva mana adhatsva / mayi buddhim nivesaya /
nivasisyasi mayy eva / ata urdhvam na samsayah

Keep your mind on me alone, your intellect on me; thus you will dwell in me from now on.

Bhagavad Gita XII.8

In this age of struggle, known as the Kali Yuga, it can be very difficult to maintain a serene mind. Conflict between nations, conflict at work, conflict with enemies, conflict with friends, conflict at home, and even conflict within oneself can disturb one's mind and destroy one's happiness. It is common to be suspicious of someone who is happy and calm, thinking they must be ignorant, uneducated, living in a bubble or even mentally ill, and that to be an intelligent, caring human being one must be disturbed and filled with anxiety, and further that if you seek solace in spiritual practices you are an escapist living in denial and burying your head in the sand.

Buddhim or buddhi means "intelligence." The highest and most important aspect of the intellect is its ability to grasp and understand the truth. Many people focus their minds on relative truth, that which is bound by the transient comings and goings of temporary existence, while the spiritual practitioner aims to comprehend or dwell in absolute truth. Absolute truth is knowledge of the supreme Self or God. Krishna in this verse from the Gita tells Arjuna that if he is able to focus his intelligence on Him, on God, then without a doubt (samsayah), he will gain access to the heart of God. God is Love. God is Great. With great love all is possible. To know God is to love God, and this is the yogi's purpose. To realize that purpose one must devote their whole being to that aim. As Patanjali advises, Ishwara pranidhanad va (PYS 1.23), and for those who do, success will be guaranteed absolutely (va).

Chitta means the "content of the mind"—the mind's intelligence—and prasad means "blessed." A blessed mind is a serene mind. Because so much of the anxiety we experience seems to us to be caused by other people—they make us mad, they act in deceitful ways, they are unfair, they are unkind, and on and on—Patanjali tells us in chapter 1.33 of the Yoga Sutra that chitta prasadanam, or serenity, is our mind's innate state. Hey, that's good news! We should have faith in that truth and do all we can to protect that blessed condition from defilement. Patanjali gives some advice as to how to accomplish that: be happy for those who are happy, compassionate for those who are unhappy, delighted for those
who are virtuous and indifferent to those who are wicked. If we choose to ignore this advice, we will become entrenched in our own negative emotions and be unable to remember God or devote ourselves to His service. Our intelligence will be consumed by anxiety, and we will be unable to enjoy anything in this world or in any other.

Finding fault with others is a sure way to disturb your mind and destroy your intelligence. When judgment of others arises, strive to let it go. Let God take care of things. If you remember that He is the supreme doer, you will be able to surrender and let go of your ego's tendency to try to control the outcome of a situation. Your job is to protect the serenity of your mind. As my teacher Shri Brahmananda would say, "mind, your own business!" Follow the dictates of the yamas and relate to others with kindness, truthfulness, caring, respect and generosity. Rid your mind of the diseases of pride, envy, anger, laziness, lust, greed and gluttony. No one is saying that this is an easy task and that we can accomplish this alone, so to provide help in times of need we would be wise to contemplate the practical suggestions given to us by holy beings and do our best to put them into practice. Help is available in the form of satsang, and satsang can appear in the form of holy teachings written by holy beings, like the Bhagavad Gita, and the Yoga Sutra as well as contemporary teachers, like Shyamdas.

Another meaning of intelligence that I found in the dictionary is "secret information." I think Shyamdas thought of intelligence like this when he spoke about the importance of protecting the most secret information, your devotional bhav: "The age of struggle has arrived and can destroy everyone's intelligence. Be careful! This Kali Yuga can swindle you, so secure your devotional mind, guarding it like you would a precious jewel. Safeguard your bhava." (Shiksha Patra 29.1, translated by Shyamdas and Vallabhdas). The Path of Grace outlines practical means to protect one's chitta prasadanam: only eat prasad, food that has first been offered to God, and even water should be offered before drinking; keep good association (satsang); listen to accounts of Shri Krishna's lilas; sing His praises and always chant the refuge mantra, Shri Krishna Sharanam Mama.

As you can see, there are many sources of holy advice. It seems like if we were able to incorporate at least some of these precious jewels offered by blessed beings into our daily lives, we could experience a little serenity during these difficult times. I certainly hope so!

▲▼ DER AKTUELLE JIVAMUKTI FOKUS DES MONATS AUF DEUTSCH:

KLARE INTELLIGENZ

Mayy eva mana adhatsva / mayi buddhim nivesaya /

Wie mein Lehrer Shri Brahmananda sagen würde "mind your own business"!

PETROS HAFFENRICHTER, a.k.a.

is director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher. She discovered her passion for Jivamukti Yoga in 2000 while temporarly living in New York. Back then, she also met her teachers Sharon Gannon & David Life for the first time. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. Anja has also been a long time student of Manorama. She teaches at the Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Center, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin.

Dechen Thurman DECHEN THURMAN
He's the brother of Uma and the son of Robert. He played Guildenstern in Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" movie and Patrick Bateman in Gerald Fox' Bret Easton Ellis film. But more importantly, his unique form of bodywork - as in Yoga and massage - has won international praise in the last couple of years.

Dechen is a holistic healer based in New York City. He is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher at the New York Jivamukti Yoga School as well as a Certified Ohashiatsu Instructor. Dechen creates a delicious sense of playfulness in his yoga classes. His method of healing is derived from these revered schools.

Last summer, more than 200 yogis in one of the biggest Open-Air Yoga classes at the Berlin Yoga Festival were hooked by his teachings (despite the fact that Germany played the semi-final of the soccer world cup at the same time; cf. the article in the German Vital magazine here). This year, he is invited, among others, to teach at the New York Yoga Journal Conference, the Yoga Conference Germany and the Wanderlust Yoga Festival.

Growing up, Dechen's family was a multicultural pioneer in hosting such luminous Tibetan refugee scholars as Geshe Wangyal, Lama Govinda, Tara Tulku Rimpoche, Dr. Yeshe Donden and Gehlek Rimpoche. A paramount time in Dechen’s life as he learned to cultivate his meditation practice with the help of these brilliant scholars. He first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age seven in Dharamsala, India.

Dechen's first taste of Jivamukti Yoga came at the age of nineteen. His dance teacher at Playwrights Horizons, Maude Karlsonn (nicknamed the "Swedish Mistress of Pain" by classmates), gave him a flier with a photo of Sharon Gannon in side crow position and told him to go to 2nd ave. and practice there. It was love at first class. He frequently attended class, initially as a warm-up for acting rehearsals, later for refuge from the pressures of his identity. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism. Many inexplicably good things would happen to him on such a punctual basis associated with Jivamukti that his life literally depended on it. The psychospiritual investigation that Jivamukti stimulated was fundamental to his success in acting and massage. Alongside his work as a Jivamukti Yoga teacher and healer, Dechen is an accomplished actor in film and theater. He has appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Hamlet, Zoolander and Gods and Generals.

Jivamukti Venice Retreat

So much has been said about the beauty of Venice that it is hard to add on to that. You just have to explore it yourself.

Maybe this little quote from Friedrich Nietzsche sums it up best: "When I seek another word for music, I always find only the word Venice."

And we believe this city is best experienced by just being there and immersing into it. This is why we picked, as our retreat headquarters, a beautiful 16th century palazzo, owned by an old Contessa, right in the middle of the historic center of Venice with less than 15mins walking distance to the famous Piazza San Marco. It is, however, located in a way much less touristic destrict where most of the one day Venice tourists from the cruise ships do not go to, so the area, close to the university, is still very much Venice for locals with decent almost mainland Italy prices for espressos and food.

Our palazzo is facing east on the Grand Canal and west on a magnificent Italian private garden, as featured in different books. We will practice yoga in the entry hall of the palace directly facing the Canale Grande and some of the participants will also live in appartments of the palace while for others we have hand-picked just as beautiful luxury apartments in other historic buildings within easy walking distance.

Anja KühnelTHE LOCATION:
Located in the middle of the valley of Itria, about an hour drive from Bari and Brindisi airports in southern Italy, the 16th century farmhouse of the World Yoga Resort "La Rose dei 4 Venti" in Puglia provides charming accomodation in historic Italian Trulli style huts. It is a true sanctuary offering delicious Italian organic homegrown vegan food, a refreshing pool and the great outdoors.

La Rosa dei 4 Venti (formerly known as Santa Maria del Sole) is a charming, family-run yoga venue - the perfect location for a week of yoga, sun, natural beauty and relaxation. There is a lovely outdoor yoga platform and indoor yoga studio. Three meals are served daily (with one evening meal out at a local restaurant) and there will be plenty of free time to relax, enjoy the views, swim, read, sleep, have treatments or explore the local villages and countryside.

La Rosa dei 4 Venti is a 15-hectare property situated on a small hillock in the heart of the Itria Valley in the heel of Italy's boot. (Nearest international airport is Brindisi). The landscape is rural and dotted with beautiful olive trees and vineyards, divided by pretty dry-stone walls. The main building is a 16th century masseria (farmhouse) that has been elegantly restored in typical, old apulian style with many of the authentic features still in place.

The grounds contain lovely gardens, a swimming pool, a wild forest and fields, and a tiny church. There is plenty of space to walk and be free.

Quietness, peace, nature, liberty, yoga, sharing, heart, love: These are the key concepts to convey the spirit of "La Rosa dei 4 Venti", set by the countryside about 5.6 miles from Martina Franca, in Apulia. The place is immersed in the splendid nature of Valle d'Itria, mostly famous for its Trulli (ancient farm buildings which have now almost all turned into houses) and for its worth visiting towns (Martina Franca, Alberobello, Ostuni, Cisternino). La Rosa dei 4 Venti is located on a hill at about 10 yards of height, halfway between the Adriatic and Ionic Sea, a place that is totally immersed in peace and quietness. It's an ancient 17th century "Masseria" (farmhouse), recently restored and renovated by keeping its original structure intact, thus meaning to convey a good perception of space and time absent and a better awareness of the present, here, now.

www.larosadei4venti.org

Italien

Our accommodation is something rather special:

"Staying in a trullo, with its smooth, white, vaulted ceiling, is rather like sleeping in an egg – or so I imagine. And just as nurturing. Decorated with monastic simplicity, the trulli add to the contemplative atmosphere and the sense of being somewhere special." -- The Guardian on La Rose dei 4 Venti

"Like a fortress of happiness, the small whitewashed dwellings of the estate, with their conical roofs, pit themselves against the endlessly blue sky...Between the 17th and the 19th centuries, farmers lived in these so-called trulli. The walls, up to three feet thick, served as protection from the cold and heat and are freshly whitewashed every year as a means of desinfection." -- Taschen Book's "Great Yoga Retreats" on La Rose dei 4 Venti

Jivamukti Yoga Retreat

as will be our food: "If the River Café had a yoga studio, this is what it might be like – but cheaper and sunnier. The food was strictly organic (as much as possible grown in the gardens) wheat free and vegan, which, happily, didn't mean no pizza or pasta (they use kamut, spelt or buckwheat flours, more nutrient, full of fibers and potassium). And there were jugs of wine with supper! The cook, the luminous Puglian-born Ilaria, believes that food cooked in a bad temper and without love will make people sick (go figure, Gordon Ramsay). Before each meal, in front of a table laden with fat tomatoes, bowls of pale creamy risotto and gleaming zucchini, the lovely Ilaria would explain the provenance and ingredients of each dish." -- The Guardian on La Rose dei 4 Venti

Italien

...and our hosts: The family who own it are suitably otherworldly: Giulia, a modern-day healer with a halo of blonde hair; her partner, Salvatore; and her two sons, PJ and Marco, as wholesome as muesli (apparently) and as handsome as models in an Armani ad. Not to forget the two kittens, who sleep in the chapel, and the once-wild dog who couldn't bear to leave – and who can blame her? This place isn't for mere mortals, but it is miraculous what a week can do. -- The Guardian on La Rose dei 4 Venti

"Those who are admitted through the stone gates of La Rose dei 4 Venti today are part of the large hippy community, which - as befits Italy - is splendidly good looking." -- Taschen Book's "Great Yoga Retreats" on La Rose dei 4 Venti

Jivamukti Retreat

So to summarize: "Plump for La Rose dei 4 Venti, in Italy's deep south, for a perfect blast of stretching, sunshine, swimming, warm homemade bread and a whitewashed farmhouse with soulful, earthy vibes. The owner, Julia, is an energy worker and healer who will calm the chattering of your mind; her two devastatingly good looking sons are like something out of Jesus Christ Superstar – one a carpenter, the other a sculptor – and they play ancient drums and chant. The food is a delicious extravaganza: local fruits, tons of salad, wholemeal pizza. And all the while the light and landscape of Puglia draw you out of yourself – raw and elemental, it begs you to reprioritise and reassess. Yogic Star!" -- Tatler Spa Guide: Yogic Star Award=1st Place in the Rating
