JIVAMUKTI YOGA FOKUS DES MONATS: WARUM WIR KRIEG GUT FINDENJivamukti Focus of the Month

▲▼ DER AKTUELLE JIVAMUKTI FOCUS OF THE MONTH AUF ENGLISCH:

"O son of Kuntī, either you will be killed on the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets, or you will conquer and enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore get up and fight with determination." — Krishna, BG II.37

"Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood." — George S. Patton

What we mean when we say "war" can be different things to different people. But just the mention of it gets our collective blood boiling. War on Crime, Culture Wars, War on Poverty, War on Cancer, War on Drugs, War on Terror - everybody knows that if you want to get people excited about something use the War word.

Governments start most wars, but populations are very quick to jump on the bandwagon - why? From a government's point of view most wars are fought to protect or expand territory and resources. From the viewpoint of the general population it means a lot of suffering and not a lot to gain. There is an obvious downside to war in the death of so many people, mostly young. Why do people agree to exterminate a large portion of their children for something that interests them little? There must be something that people really like about war.

It is not difficult to perceive that the reason humans cannot live in peace is because they like war. Conflict seems to give humans a zesty feeling of being alive. Waving the flags, putting on the uniforms, and loading up the guns have global appeal. Our normal humdrum existence has new meaning as we choose up sides and start shooting. People rally around the flag and become part of something larger than themselves. Their usually boring lives will now be filled with duty, drama, melodrama, death, sacrifice, and heroics (this is an important one, because through war the common man can make heroic actions and become recognized as a hero.) A list of wars, decade-by-decade, dead hero by dead hero often indexes our experience of history. In the parts of the world where people have been disenfranchised, war gives them a voice and empowerment to express their social, political, and religious views.

It is estimated that 362 days each year humans are waging "big" war (the UN decided that "big" war is 1000+ casualties/year). Those "big" wars provide the spice to the 365 days each year that we wage inner psychic war, medium to small wars with the others we live near, and universal war on the Earth and her resources and all nonhuman species.

The first step to harm another being is to see them as separate from you. If they are "other" then they can be harmed without any harm to the protagonist. When countries are at war with each other they spend time and energy propagandizing their population about the "inhuman" nature of the enemy, in order to justify their demise.

Animals raised or hunted for food or sport, are not considered to have the right to life, or even decent treatment while alive. Today 3.7 billion/yr animals are slaughtered in gulag style for "food." That figure does not count sea creatures, experimental animals, hunting, fur industry, and many other ways that this insidious war is waged.

The War against Mother Nature marches on continuously as resources and species are exploited with no regard for consequences. Each year people who live in places that are blessed to live without what the U.N. calls "big" war, go out into the forest and field to wage a big war on the animals (100 million+/yr hunted), nature, and each other in the pursuit of entertainment, bonding, and ill-got self-esteem. In the countryside the sounds of gunshots, earthmovers and chainsaws are a daily reminder of the state of war that we all live in. This atmosphere of War-thought nurtures school shootings, suicides, bombings, and general mayhem.

Common ground is the key to changing this warring nature. If we experience commonality, the same desires rights, and needs - in others, then they are less "other" and more "like" us. In a yoga asana practice we move through many forms…tree, mountain, sage, dog, snake, but our identification is rooted in the breath that is equally present in each new form or shape. At the end of a practice the feeling of integration is a direct result of the experience of commonality. Regular yoga practice allows each of us to become a "hero" for a few minutes each day, and to have the unusual experience of bliss. Make Yoga not War!

Make yoga, not war!

▲▼ CURRICULUM & BIO JASON LAMBERTH

The first Go Deeper Series will be a 8 part Meditation Summer School taught by Jason Lamberth starting June 27. Before the actual Meditation Summer School begins, Jason will start with a 3 part refresher course on June 6, 13 and 20, by reviewing the key elements of the Bok Jinpa series, including all you need to know about compassion, enlightenment, karma, and of course, the meditation basics. For the newbies, "Bok Jinpa" is Tibetan for "set your meditation on fire." And we plan on doing just that!

The actual Meditation Summer School workshop series is designed to create a solid foundation for the yoga and meditation student that wants a deeper understanding of Hindu and Buddhist meditation. We will study many of the sacred practices that masters have been practicing and passing down a pure lineage for centuries.

· You want to kick your yoga practice into overdrive?
· You want a meditation practice that will take you beyond your wildest dreams?
· You want stillness, peace, love, and all that other good spiritual stuff?
· Then this class is for you!
· We will study three ancient books:
· Bhavana Krama (Hindi-"steps of meditation") by Master Kamilashila, 750 AD
· Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, 200 AD

This series is just the beginning. If you come to every class and do all the homework, which includes daily meditations and readings, you won't know yourself by the end. It's Summer School people! Let's play!

BIO JASON LAMBERTH

Jason LamberthJason Lamberth's search for inner wisdom started while growing up within a conservative Christian family in Florida. This was the foundation for a spiritual journey spanning many different religions and philosophies. Jason's path distinctly shifted as he began teaching Buddhist meditation in 2004 in NYC. His teaching evolved to include Hindu Yogic philosophy, as well as ancient traditions like astrology and shamanism. Jason's contagious passion for meditation and personal sharing from his 12 years of experience creates a dynamic space to uncover the hidden nuances of teachings sacred Buddhist and Hindu texts passed down from a pure lineage that up until 15 years ago, were only available in an authentic monastery. He has taught at Yoga Teacher Trainings, resorts and yoga centers in Bali, where he has a furniture factory since 2001. He also teaches regularly in Berlin, where he has two daughters, Mia, 18, Liv, 11, and a furniture studio in Weissensee.

▲▼ MEHR INFORMATION ZU THE JIVAMUKTIS

The Jivamuktis are Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel (Harmonium + voice), Jan Blumenroth (guitar + backing voice) and - usually also - Atul Krshna on drums.

"The life of the jivanmukta is not normal. The jivanmukta realizes that even though the past cannot be undone, he or she can affect the future by what he or she does here and now. The jivanmukta nevers loses sight of joy as the goal." -- Sharon Gannon + David Life in Jivamukti Yoga - Practices for Liberating Body and Soul

"The jivanmukta does not fear the world, nor does the world fear the jivanmukta. The jivanmukta is at peace with the ways of the world. Finally, the jivanmukta maintains a cool head." - Vidyaranya, The Jivan-Mukti-Viveka

"sat-sangatve nissangatvam nissangatve nirmohatvam nirmohatve nishchala-tattvam nishchala-tattve jivanmuktih bhaja govindam bhaja govindam bhaja govindam mudha-mate" — Shri Adi Shankaracharya from Carpata-Panjarika

"Good and virtuous company gives rise to non-attachment. From non-attachment comes freedom from delusion. With freedom from delusion, one feels the changeless reality. Experiencing that changeless reality, one attains liberation in this life. I-AM is the ocean of awareness. Realizing this, one feels, "I am not the body and mind, although I have a body and mind." Realize Govinda, realize Govinda, realize Govinda in your heart, O wise one!" Interpretation by Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL is the director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher. She discovered her passion for Jivamukti Yoga in 2000 while temporarly living in New York. Back then, she also met her teachers Sharon Gannon & David Life for the first time. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. Anja has also been a long time student of Manorama. She teaches at her two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin.

Jan BlumenrothJAN BLUMENROTH first set foot into the old Jivamukti New York Studio in 1995, when Bhagavan Das and Uma asked him to give them a lift from Woodstock to the city to hold a Kirtan. He immediately felt right at home and started to practice Jivamukti Yoga regularly. Fast forward 18 years, Jan graduated the Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in Germany in 2013 and since 2014 has been teaching Jivamukti Yoga at Jivamukti Yoga Berlin.
The time between these pivotal events in his life, Jan spent, amongst other things, running the legendary Beethoven Street Studios in Kensal Town with producers David M Allen (The Cure, Depeche Mode, Human League) and Mark Ralph (Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip, Years&Years) and playing in several rock bands there. Jan moved to Berlin in 2010 and was a founding member of the Berlin band 'All The Ghosts'. After finishing the Jivamukti teacher training, he realized that it is far more beneficial to concentrate on the sacred aspect of music, supplicating all the gods with The Jivamuktis :)

Atul KrshnaATUL KRSHNA (Tabla, Khol, Cajon, Hand-percussion & Gesang)

"MEET THE INNOVATORS...SHARON GANNON AND DAVID LIFE" (Yoga Journal, USA)
Jivamukti Yoga founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, is one of the fastest growing and most highly regarded modern approaches to the ancient art of yoga. Sharon Gannon together with David Life have certified hundreds of students to teach the Jivamukti method through the intense one month residential 300 hour Teacher Training course which is offered each year in the US, Costa Rica and/or Europe/India. With their Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga" (also translated into German, Russian & Italian), "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism", "Cats and Dogs are People, too!", "Simple Recipes for Joy", Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Sharon Gannon David LifeSHARON GANNON started her quest for liberation upon her birth on July 4th in Washington, DC. Sharon views art as a means for uplifting the soul and her artistic pursuits enriched the community by educating and inspiring. In 1984 she shifted her main focus from the performing arts to teaching yoga in the hope of giving practical methods that would benefit people more directly and immediately. Sharon has studied yoga since 1976 with many teachers around the globe, most notably with Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalanada, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Shankarananda, Shyam Das and Bhagavan Das. She brings a rare blend of scholarly study, artistic pursuits and a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her offerings as a teacher.

DAVID LIFE: Bios are hard for me to digest. The idea that a picture could be painted of me with some little list of factoids is untenable. The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers. Sometimes I like to read bios because it tells me things about a person that I didn't know and to that end, here is a list of all the significant jobs that have come my way over the past 60 years, in order: Lawnmowing and snowshoveling, Paper delivery, Beer and Wine store stockboy, Forklift driver in Corrugated box company, Phone order taker, Dishwasher, Cafeteria manager, Welder in Steel MIll, Apartment building super, Silk screen production and designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Artist, Poet, Life Cafe owner, Yoga teacher, Bio writer!

Everyone is talking about Sharon & David's Jivamukti Yoga method….
“Sharon Gannon und David Life who founded their own yoga method called Jivamukti Yoga in the late 80ies and, with it, made Yoga for the first time ever socially acceptable for western urban dwellers. Among their students are Sting, Madonna, Christy Turlington and basically all other non-overweight famous american actors and musicians. Many speak about them as Gurus. With their mixture of old Indian tradition and modern lifestyle like rock music they were the ones who were majorly responsible for the Yoga boom, which from New York has long spilled over to Germany: Three million Germans are said to regularly practice Yoga these days ... in Berlin-Mitte it appear to be two million alone.'
--Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Germany
"David Life looks like Iggy Pop, is widely tatooed, has an incredible power in his stringy tiny arms and the great luck to have a woman on his side who has a delphine blue streak in her black hair and who is radiating a mild wisdom that makes one want to start crying immediately as soon as she opens her mouth. With their headsets, the two contrive to get every hall to boil.... – Oh My Guru!"
--DIE WELT, Germany

--Sting
"It has the full package, more than just exercise. I always learn something at Jivamukti; they really educate the students."

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT LOCATION AND ACCOMODATION

Wild Woodstock Retreat

OUR LOCATION FOR THE YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS:
Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life open part of their home in Woodstock, NY (USA) for this special retreat. Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary which also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all yoga classes and events of this retreats will be held.

The Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary is a magical 125-acre sanctuary established in 2003 and located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains near Woodstock in upstate New York (about 2 hours north of New York City and 3.5 miles from downtown Woodstock).

The Sanctuary serves as a safe haven and unpolluted habitat for diverse plant and animal communities, including white tail deer, black bear, foxes, porcupines, possums, raccoons, turkeys, as well as a large variety of wild birds, fish, snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In present culture, the word wild is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized," but the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others." The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness—to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully.

Sharon Gannon often teaches that we can have anything we want so long as we are willing to provide it to others first. She and David Life live that teaching by having established and by maintaining the Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary, which is the country ashram for the Jivamukti Yoga School.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

YOUR ACCOMMODATION DURING THIS RETREAT will be provided in handpicked high quality properties/houses in the Woodstock area. All houses are shared (2 to 5 twin/double or single rooms in one property), i.e. you will share a common living area, a fully equipped self-catered kitchen and 1 to 3 bathrooms with up to 4-10 other retreat participants (depending on the size of the house, number of single rooms booked etc.). All properties and rooms are individual with their special treats so it is hard to compare them. We also offer a number of optional upgrades to the standard accommodation to better suit your individual requirements. Check registration form for details.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

BOARD DURING THIS REATREAT: All houses come with well equipment self-catered kitchens and are strictly vegan, i.e. no diary, egg or meat products may be brought into any of the houses.  The idea of this retreat is to also create a Satsang experience by cooking together delicious vegan meals in groups of likeminded vegan yogis. All houses will be equipped with a copy of Sharon Gannon’s cookbook “Simple Recipes for Joy”. For days/nights out, there are also some very nice vegan restaurants in Woodstock.

BEING WILD, the underlying theme of this first of its kind retreat, in present culture, is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized". But the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others". The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness - to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully. Reaching this state actually requires the oposite of "chaos" and "disorganization": A regular intensive yoga practice, not only asana wise but also by studying the other legs of yoga and having satsang with other like minded yogis and most importantly, your teachers.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

This is why we have designed this first ever Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreat in Woodstock in order to provide you the opportunity to immerse for up to two weeks in intensive dalily study and practice right from the source with the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method. Every morning of this retreat, Sharon Gannon and/or David Life will teach a 4 hour intensive Jivamukt Yoga workshop from 10am to 2pm (ca. 3 hour asana practice and ca. 1 hour yoga philosophy teachings). These workshop style morning classes will be complemented by daily 2hour Jivamukti Yoga Open XL classes with Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel and occassionally also other international Jivamukti Yoga teachers in the late afternoon and, approximately every other evening, Satsangs, Kirtans and other special events with Sharon Gannon, David Life, Anja Kuehnel and other presenters.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Special Bonus Events: Approximately 1-2 times per week, we hope to offer special events in the late afternoon/evening, such as Satsangs or Kirtans or Yoga Philosophy lectures with Sharon Gannon, David Life and other presenters, which in some cases due to time constraints will be offered INSTEAD of the afternoon Open XL class (i.e. sometimes no Open XL class on special events days). Once during each of the two weeks of this retreat, we invite you to a Karma Yoga session to benefit the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary area. Exact daily schedule TBA at the retreat venue.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Please note for your planning: On the arrival days there is NO morning class nor Q&A conference with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life, i.e. the first class on your arrival day is the afternoon class with Anja. This also applies if your arrival day is August 22 even though Sharon and David teach on this day in the morning, as this class is only for the people who also booked Part I of the retreat. On August 29 (final day), there is no evening class with Anja, last class on August 29 is the morning workshop with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life from 10am-2pm. As normal with renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life, the practice space included in this retreat strictly is the size of one regularly sized yoga mat (ca. 0,65x1,8m) only. All practice spots are marked and mats must be placed within the markers. You must bring your own yoga mat. The yoga room has blankets and straps for your use. It also has a limited number of blocks. If you anticipate using blocks, please bring your own, as we cannot guarantee to have enough for everyone.

THE 2015 WILD WOODSTOCK CHANT WEEKEND @ WOODSTOCK, NY (USA)
The 2015 Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend

Jivamukti Yoga Berlin, in collaboration with Sharon Gannon's + David Life's Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary, humbly presents The 2015 Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend featuring life kirtan concerts with world-reknowned kirtan artists Krishna Das, Bhagavan Das, Sharada Devi as well as a satsang with Sharon Gannon + David Life followed by a kirtan with "The Jivamuktis".

Do not miss this great opportunity to chant together with some of the greatest Kirtan artists of our time that are very dear to the wordwide Jivamukti Yoga satsang as they share a lot of their own roots and history with it. All this in the very intimate setting of the home of living yoga masters and Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life in Woodstock, NY (USA). Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary which also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all events of this chant weekend will be held.

This weekend is a very rare chance to get really close and chant mostly unplugged in a relatively small group with these world-renowned kirtan artists and yogis that, one can honestly say, together started a movement back in the days when these yoga and kirtan pioneers introduced yoga to the West. Especially in the case of Grammy nominee Krishna Das who usually fills concert halls with thousands of people and just recently announced to go on a one year sabbatical in 2016, this might also be your chance of a life time.

The 2015 Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend is also part of The 2015 Jivamukti Wild Woodstock Intensive Retreat. This means that dedicated yogis from all over the world will be already participating for a full-on multi-cultural chanting experience. But it also means, since the retreat will be full to capacity, that there will only a very limited number of spots available for sale for non-retreat participants. Therefore, we strongly suggest to book your spots early through this website.

SCHEDULE:
Friday, August 21, 2015, 6:00pm: Krishna Das
Saturday, August 22, 2015, 6:00pm:
Sharon Gannon + David Life (Satsang) + The Jivamuktis feat. special guests (Kirtan)
Sunday, August 23, 2015, 6:30pm:
Bhagavan Das + Sharada Devi

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON KRISHNA DAS - AUGUST 21, 6:00PM

Luminous Shabda Retreat

"Krishna Das, who had produced Jai's CD, was in the audience that night. Unlike Jai Uttal, Krishna Das had concentrated for the past few years not on singing in public but on producing recordings for other people. He came to us with such humility and asked if he could sing every week, adding that he used to chant in India at Maharaji's ashram. The next day Jai returned to California, but Krishna Das became the 'house kirtan-wallah' leading kirtan at Jivamukti Yoga Center regularly on Monday nights." -- Sharon Gannon + David Life in Jivamukti Yoga - Practices for Liberating Body and Soul

Fast forward 20+ years from this lovely story ... and here is Jivamukti Yoga Berlin humbly presenting:

Live + unplugged @ The Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary:
The Rock Star of Yoga + 2012 Grammy Nominee KRISHNA DAS
Layering traditional kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga's "rock star." With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling western chant artist of all time. His album 'Live Ananda' (released January 2012) was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age album category.

KD spent the late '60's traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass' own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji.

Given the name Krishna Das, KD began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion.

After two and a half years with Maharaj-ji, returned to USA - alas, six months after his return, word came that Maharaj-ji had died.

He took solace in music, finding peace and strength in both his Bhakti yoga practice as well as in such heroes as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Bruce Springsteen (whom he laughingly calls "the Bodhisattva of New Jersey"). KD also co-founded Triloka Records, a California-based label specializing in world music, releasing such artists as Jai Uttal, sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, and legendary jazz musician/composer Jackie McLean.

In 1994, KD started leading chant at Jivamukti Yoga Center, NYC, with an ever-growing audience of yoga students that has led him to chant with people all around the world. In February 2013, Krishna Das performed at the Grammy awards in Los Angeles, CA streamed online to millions of viewers. The award-winning film 'One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das' has been in over 100 US cities, over 10 countries worldwide and is available on DVD everywhere.

With the release of his 14th album, Kirtan Wallah—one who sings kirtan, KD offers a westward-leaning album, fully embracing his American roots in rock and country and yet embodying the spirit of deeply devotional Indian chants - the heart of this latest album is still in the Names that he's singing.

"The chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it," KD promises. "That's the point of this whole thing. That's what cuts through all the 'stuff'. You get lit up. You don't have to know what it means."

Check out these two messages by Krishna Das on his common history with Jivamukti Yoga in bringing Kirtan to the West:

David Life, Anja Kuehnel and Sharon Gannon during Satsang in Berlin

On the pivotal Saturday evening of The 2015 Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend, Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life will hold a Satsang followed by a Kirtan concert by The Jivamuktis feat. special suprise guests.

The satsang with Sharon Gannon and David Life at the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary at their home will be an essential part of The Jivamukti Yoga Wild Woodstock Retreat and it will focus on the general theme of this retreat and it's idea of exploring wildness.

"This is the principle of satsang, which translates as 'company of the True.' It applies to hanging out not only with a guru but also with saints, devotees, fellow yoga students - with anyone who is making a sincere effort in spiritual practice to experience the Self. When people have an intense yearning for God, their mood is infectious. We get a contact high from their God intoxication. ...Satsang is different from ordinary social gatherings. Many of the rules of social engagement are suspended when the guest of honor is God." -- Sharon Gannon + David Life in Jivamukti Yoga - Practices for Liberating Body and Soul

"The fastest sadhana, for sure, is to hang out with other people who love God." - Shyam Das

The Jivamuktis chanting Kirtan in Berlin

This special evening of Satsang on Saturday night will culminate in a Kirtan concert with The Jivamuktis, the working title of Anja Kuehnel's Jivamukti Yoga Berlin band, which, here in Woodstock, will feature some very special surprise guests :)

The Jivamuktis are Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel (Harmonium + voice), Jan Blumenroth (guitar + backing voice) and - in Berlin - Atul Krshna on tablas. At The 2015 Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend, tablas and percussion will be played by Martin Brading, the photographer who did all the photos in the bestselling "The Art of Yoga" art photography book of Sharon Gannon and David Life.

Anja KühnelANJA KUEHNEL is the director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher.

Anja KühnelMARTIN BRADING is a fashion and fine-art photographer based in New York City and Woodstock, New York. His fine art photographs of India have been published in internatiolnal magazines such as Namarupa. In the international Jivamukti Yoga satsang, he is popular mostly for taking the beautiful pictures of Sharon Gannon and David Life in The Art of Yoga coffee table book. Martin has been a regular vistor to India along with Shyam Das where he studied and practiced Indian percussion for years. Regularly, he accompanied Shyam Das during Kirtan concerts and Satsangs in Woodstock, Goa and Vraj, India.

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON BHAGAVAN DAS + SHARADA DEVI - AUGUST 23, 6:30PM

Luminous Shabda Retreat

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God, Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself. He is the last living cultural icon of the 60's. As Ram Das's mentor and Guru (author of Be Here Now), he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album "Ah" (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix's manager Michael Jeffrey's was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan. Alan Watt's himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album "Ah" that "Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga". To experience Bhagavan Das in concert is to receive Darshan of the Guru himself, to touch and be touched by the immortal essence of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba- as the Light of the Guru is delivered through the mystical and potent voice of Bhagavan Das. His devotion to his Guru as that living inner sound is what he shares and transmits to all that wish to receive this blessing. Bhagavan Das's rare and sacred offering to this world is his singing open heart, heralding the Guru's Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

"We discovered the power of kirtan through Sharon's fascination with the ecstatic chanting of Bhagavan Das. She searched for all the information she could find about him. (...) Soon we were practicing asanas while listening to devotional chanting by Maharji's devotees (=Bhagavan Das et.al.). The music juiced up our own practice and so we felt it natural to share it with our students. We played his music to accompany the yoga classes we taught. (...) We never imagined, however, that these great singers would end up at the Jivamukti Yoga Center someday! (...) To be honest, we were a little apprehensive about meeting the man that Allen Ginsberg said, in his poem 'Ah, Bhagavan Das Singing' 'sits on floors to sing, closes his eyes and groans to God for hours, and can sing the blues, in Yogic Sanskrit like a perfect Virgin.'. Was the hype we had developed around Bhagavan Das for so many years going to match up to the real flesh-and-blood person? Well, Bhagavan Das came and gave the first of many concerts/satsangs at Jivamukti. He was everything and more than we had imagined." -- Sharon Gannon + David Life in Jivamukti Yoga - Practices for Liberating Body and Soul

And with these legendary words from the final pages of the Jivamukti Yoga book in mind, it is a great honor to have Bhagavan Das + Sharada Devi join us for the first ever Wild Woodstock Chant Weekend this August at Sharon Gannon's + David Life's Wild Woodstock forrest sanctuary.

Bhagavan Das (Dharma Sara) on Bhagavan Das
"I left America for India in 1963 to find my Guru. I was the the first American to live in the jungle of the Himalyas as a hermit-sadhu. I was given the Holy Name of Ram by Bhramanada Saraswati through his disciple Mahish Yogi. I went off alone to the caves in the mountains to meditate. I then came to meet Swami Chaitanya Prakashananda Tirth who gave me tapas to fast and pray for God's Grace. After a year of fasting, prayer and intense purification I met my Sat-Guru the Great Mahasiddha Neem Karolie Baba. I then lived with my Guru, side by side for many years. Then one day because of the Tantric path that Neem Karoli Baba knew I must travel and many karmic connections due to ripen he sent me away to Tibet to go deeper, deeper and then beyond with the last living Yogis high in the Mountain peaks of Tibet and Nepal. It was also during this time in 1971 that I met Sharada Devi who was still living her last life as a Tibetan Yogini. She was very old then and I was very young but our connection was a promise to come together again due to the Grace of Neem Karoli Baba. During my time with the Tibetan Yogis I was the first to meet and live with Lama Kalu, the Guru of the 16th Karmapa. He gave me the Essense Mahamudra Transmission, mind to mind. I recieved the Mother Light from His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche and then the Vajra Yogini directly from the Karmapa in Sikkhim. I lived with Yogi Chen who explained all the details to me in english in his hermatage in Kalingpong. When on pilgrimage to the holy Bodhanath Stupa in Kathmandu I met and became the Guru of Richard Alpert who was to become Ram Dass after I brought him to Neem Karoli Baba. I am here now by the grace of the Guru Dev Dakini. She is the Mother Light always guiding me on the true path of Bodhichitta. This is It for Now."
RAMRAM
Bhagavan Das

Bhagavan Das (Dharma Sara) on Sharada Devi (Drime Khandro)
"Sharada Devi has surrendered her life in service to others stemming from the depths of her own suffering. She is here to help us transform our false sense of ego and self-pity into the jewel of pure love and compassion. In her most recent past life she lived as a hermit-yogini in Tibet and so in this birth seeking and serving only the Living Vajra Guru has been her mission. She was given the name Dharma by Yogi Bhajan which began her long 15 year sadhana of intense purification. Many years later we met in Los Angeles and her love for GOD and Guru Neem Karoli Baba brought her home to my heart cave. We married and merged into the sound current of Divine Love in the Kirtan of the Holy Name. We now travel and share the blessings of the Mother Light Kirtan. She is the Wisdom Dakini dancing naked in the sky of my Heart-Mind. She is my Guru, showing me the depth of the shadow light and how to transform all negativity into the Bliss of Here Now. She is an inspired poet and her voice is a living prayer for all of Her children to be free. She is the Temple of the Mother Light."

Dechen Thurman DECHEN THURMAN
He's the brother of Uma and the son of Robert. He played Guildenstern in Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" movie and Patrick Bateman in Gerald Fox' Bret Easton Ellis film. But more importantly, his unique form of bodywork - as in Yoga and massage - has won international praise in the last couple of years.

Dechen is a holistic healer based in New York City. He is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher at the New York Jivamukti Yoga School as well as a Certified Ohashiatsu Instructor. Dechen creates a delicious sense of playfulness in his yoga classes. His method of healing is derived from these revered schools.

Last summer, more than 200 yogis in one of the biggest Open-Air Yoga classes at the Berlin Yoga Festival were hooked by his teachings (despite the fact that Germany played the semi-final of the soccer world cup at the same time; cf. the article in the German Vital magazine here). This year, he is invited, among others, to teach at the New York Yoga Journal Conference, the Yoga Conference Germany and the Wanderlust Yoga Festival.

Growing up, Dechen's family was a multicultural pioneer in hosting such luminous Tibetan refugee scholars as Geshe Wangyal, Lama Govinda, Tara Tulku Rimpoche, Dr. Yeshe Donden and Gehlek Rimpoche. A paramount time in Dechen’s life as he learned to cultivate his meditation practice with the help of these brilliant scholars. He first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age seven in Dharamsala, India.

Dechen's first taste of Jivamukti Yoga came at the age of nineteen. His dance teacher at Playwrights Horizons, Maude Karlsonn (nicknamed the "Swedish Mistress of Pain" by classmates), gave him a flier with a photo of Sharon Gannon in side crow position and told him to go to 2nd ave. and practice there. It was love at first class. He frequently attended class, initially as a warm-up for acting rehearsals, later for refuge from the pressures of his identity. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism. Many inexplicably good things would happen to him on such a punctual basis associated with Jivamukti that his life literally depended on it. The psychospiritual investigation that Jivamukti stimulated was fundamental to his success in acting and massage. Alongside his work as a Jivamukti Yoga teacher and healer, Dechen is an accomplished actor in film and theater. He has appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Hamlet, Zoolander and Gods and Generals.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT CENTER AND ACCOMODATION

Anja KühnelTHE LOCATION:
Already for the 3rd time in a row, we are returning to a very special and remote place right on a secluded private beach on the Atlantic, meaning that we can jump into the ocean directly after yoga and can take our meals right one the beach everyday.

Nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys of La Gomera, defined on both sides by hilly slopes, the finca expands down to a beach of 500 metres length.

It is an idyllic retreat with a magic of its own and many lively contrasts. There is the elemental force of nature – we are situated right by the Atlantic whose rushing waves make up the finca's "sound-track". In the morning, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea, in the evening the setting sun turns Mt. Teide on the neighbouring island Tenerife to gold – at 3718m it is Spain's highest mountain.

Italien

We will be staying in neatly restored old farmers' houses which were originally part of an old and remote banana plantation, that today has been converted to an organic farm which operates solely to provide the guests of the venue with fresh organic produce.

Italien

Surrounded by 10 hectars of organic plantation (actually the first recognized biological enterprise on La Gomera), most of the vegetables, herbs and fruits needed for feeding the guests are grown right on site. The hundreds of organically grown plants make sure that our fruit buffet is filled all year round with bananas, papayas, mangoes, mameys, dates, oranges, melons, avocados and strawberries – all these according to their different seasons. When the harvest surpasses the demand, juices and jams are produced.

We can eat outside during the entire retreat. One dining terrace is situated directly by the sea, the other one within the finca amongst mango trees and date palms. At mealtimes you help yourself to delicious dishes prepared by the Gomeran catering team with fresh products mainly from the Finca. Vegan dishes will be served throughout the week.

Italien

The vegetable garden supplies cucumber, tomatoes, courgettes, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, rucola, aubergines, pumpkins, green beans, red and green peppers, etc. More sensitive plants grow in our three large greenhouses.
This is only a small excerpt from the horticultural world of the finca. You can learn more about the history, the organisation, plants and trees on an optional botanical tour offered.

Italien

The best part, however, is the peaceful and remote location...the plantation can only be reached by boat or a 2 hour walk, which means that there are no roads, no hurry -- only the singing of birds, the whispering of the wind and the murmur of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Italien

The journey to the plantation, which with multiple boat rides is itself a lot of fun, easily affords time for reflection. Immerse yourself! Guests arrive and depart exclusively in our own launches – our workforce also travel in this manner. Since the only other way is a narrow path which leads hikers to San Sebastian in about 2 ½ hours we are protected from unbidden guests. There is no road access. This means, our guests and their children can move freely and safely around the large Finca. Because of its remote situation it has always been necessary to install all essentials. The development from plantation to holiday village has raised the standard but the self-sufficient character remained, on an equally high standard.

No 'tricks', no short cuts!!!

WORKSHOP LANGUAGE: English. Participants should have a basic understanding of English as there will be no translation.

YOGA JOURNAL magazine has called her an innovator in yoga. VANITY FAIR gives her credit for making yoga cool and hip in the West. FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE praised her for having made yoga, for the first time ever, presentable to Western urban dwellers:

Three years after her hugely popular Jivamukti Workshop day and book premiere celebration, Jivamukti co-founder Sharon Gannon finally returns to Berlin for a very special 3-part Jivamukti Yoga workshop series. This event is not to be missed and, as in the past when Sharon came to Berlin, we do expect a good amount of people from all over Europe for a very special celebration of the Jivamukti community and satsang here in Berlin.

What to expect? We start on Thursday morning when you can enjoy the one-and-only chance to take a classic (yet slightly extended to 2 hours) Jivamukti Open class taught by the founder of the method in the more intimate Jivamukti Yoga Kreuzberg center. So we guess this could be called a Master class (meaning it is not for masters but open for all, but taught by masters). A rare chance to experience how a Jivamukti Open class is taught right from the source. As planned for all events of this extended weekend, after the asana practice there will be a ca. 1 hour Satsang/Q+A/Booksigning. The two 3-hour Jivamukti Yoga Workshops on Friday evening and Saturday morning with Sharon Gannon and Jules Febre will leave you blissed out and charged with new knowledge. Expect new inspiring input on yoga asanas taught the Jivamukti way (correctly;) but also new insights on the main philosophical aspects and yogic scriptures that Jivamukti Yoga is based on. But most of all, expect a vigorous asana practice that will leave you as blissed out and recharged as only Jivamukti Yoga can be. All of this direct from the source, the co-founder and main force behind Jivamukti Yoga: Sharon Gannon, this time accompanied by travelling Jivamukti master teacher Jules Febre.

This is undoubtedly THE highlight of 2015 for all European Jivamukti Yoga practitioners and teachers (and those interested in becoming such) as well as yogis and teachers of all other styles and backgrounds of yoga. A very special opportunity to dive deeply into the Jivamukti yoga method within 3 days, to connect with the international European Jivamukti Yoga satsang and a once of a lifetime opportunity to deepen your Asana practice, detoxify body, heart and spirit, and obtain a profound spiritual experience with the founder of this internationally recognized and practiced method of Hatha yoga.

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON SHARON GANNON + JULES FEBRE

Sharon Gannon"MEET THE INNOVATOR...SHARON GANNON" (Yoga Journal , USA)
Jivamukti Yoga founded by Sharon Gannon, is one of the fastest growing and most highly regarded modern approaches to the ancient art of yoga. Sharon Gannon together with David Life have certified hundreds of students to teach the Jivamukti method through the intense one month residential 300 hour Teacher Training course which is offered each year in the US and in Europe. With her Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga" (also translated into German, Russian & Italian), "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism" and "Cats and Dogs are People, too!," Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Sharon Gannon started her quest for liberation upon her birth on July 4th in Washington, DC.

JulesJules Febre is an internationally acclaimed Jivamukti Yoga Teacher. He began his practice at the age of 6. At the age of 13, Jules spent time traveling in India with David Life. During that time he was invited to share satsang with Swami Nirmalananda and Shyam Das, two radical yogis, as well as studying Ashtanga Yoga with Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois - three beings that have each helped to add to the progression of yoga in the West. Jules travels the world teaching Jivamukti Yoga, Hip Hop Asana, and leading 300-Hour Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training Programs in addition to mentoring in the 500-Hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Program. With a desire to serve the community in which he was raised, Jules teaches in youth development programs, prisons, and probation centers in New York City and around the world. He is a featured teacher at the US Yoga Journal Conferences and many international yoga festivals throughout the world. Having appeared in multiple magazines, on television and radio, he is recognized for his unique self-expression and a progressive teaching style that is filled with fun, humor and inspiration. Jules teaches a rigorous class with creative sequencing permeated by yoga philosophy with joyful wisdom that inspires, uplifts and serves all those he meets. Jules gives thanks to his Gurus Sharon Gannon and David Life and life long mentor Yogeswari. Spending most of the time these days on the road teaching classes, workshops and Jivamukti Immersions around the world, his guiding question is always: What is yoga asking of us? To use the practices in a way that will enable us to cause a shift in our consciousness, our perception and thus our world and the lives of those around us is his answer.

Check out these two nice videos with Jules talking about Jivamukti Yoga and chanting that were taken on his last Japan tour:
