TERMINE:

Sun., 4.3.12, 10.00-13.00:
FREEDOM FROM ATTACHMENT - A JIVAMUKTI YOGA BIRD POSES WORKSHOP
In the Samadhi Pada of the Yoga Sutra by Maharishi Patanjali, he describes the 2-step plan towards what ultimate reality is.  That is if the seer can cease the rising of fluctuations of the mind, he can dwell in his real nature, “Samadhi”, or “Yoga”.  And in the Sadhana Pada of the Yoga Sutra, he lays out that it is attachment, our attachment to emotions that ultimately hurts us.  Patanjali lays out the fundamental requirement that the yogi will never be able to complete all the hard work needed to reach his/her destiny to help all sentient beings if he does not have the strongest motivation to do so.  Every moment, everything and everyone in our lives are a chance to practice;  to practice of letting go, letting go of the idea that things or people are what they are, but rather realize they are what we are!

This workshop will be an all-level bird poses class that invites the practitioner to take on the challenge to see things in a new perspective.  Noticing the challenges, concepts and emotions that arise during the practice.  Options will be provided as the yogi is taught to build up his confidence in arm-balances and inversions and practical knowledge for seeing things clearly as his/her practice progress and eventually see things the in a new perspective.

Excerpts from the 1st & 2nd Chapter of the Yoga Sutra will be chanted and followed by commentary.

Sun., 4.3.12, 14.00-17.00:
5 POWERS & 4 INFINITE THOUGHTS - A JIVAMUKTI BACKBENDING WORKSHOP
Devotional Faith is the ke y to gaining power in your practice, the real power yoga.  Patanjali lays down the fundamental for the yogi to plant the right seed for how to see ultimate reality directly.  It is the surrendering to the all-knowing master, God!  It is NOT blind faith here but rather surrender to the One with constant effort, pure awareness in meditation that leads to wisdom to see ultimate reality.  But we cannot see the ultimate reality without first planting the right seed for it.  Hence Patanjali also provides us with the kindest thoughts and intentions that allow us to see all beings and all things as holy beings and teachers. Seeing them as our Guru. God!

This workshop will be an all-level back-bending class that invites the practitioner to take on the challenge to open their hearts to have all loving kindness and compassion to all beings, as well as equanimity of mind in times of trouble.  We will warm up the spine gently with options for all levels of practitioners and slowly bring the yogi to various dimensions of backbends.  Slowly allowing the yogi to open their hearts and receive the grace of God.  The oneness of being!

Excerpts from the 1st Chapter of the Yoga Sutra will be chanted and followed by commentary.

SIR EDWARD CLARK & THE TRIPSICHORE PERFORMING ARTS ENSEMBLE:
ADVANCING YOUR PRACTICE - Ein Tripsichore Yoga Workshop & Live Performance Wochenende in Berlin.

Edward Clark

Experience the wonder of the Tripsichore Yoga Theater Company in the performance of "The Last Breath" on Friday, March 9th, and immerse yourself in the practice through four workshops with Edward Clark, offered March 10 - 11th.

Tripsichore Vinyasa Yoga is both challenging and fun.  It encourages the student to explore the furthest range of their physical potential while providing the technical approaches that ensure safety.  The Tripsichore Yoga style has been developed for 30 years and, in investigating yoga, has endeavoured to reconcile the idea of making advanced physical practice enhance the ends of a spiritual quest.

TERMINE: 9.-11.3.2012

ORT: Jivamukti Yoga Berlin Mitte, Brunnenstr. 29, 10119 Berlin

Edward Clark THE TRIPSICHORE VINYASA YOGA STYLE developed by Sir Edward Clark is both challenging and fun. Expect to experiment with unusual inversions and back bends. In a Tripsichore workshop, you’ll be sure to learn some new and interesting variations on inverted postures and new ways to achieve back bends.  You’ll find out how to be more flexible and how to do things that look like they require considerable strength but, in accord with yogic principles, you’ll also discover that these are achieved with grace and ease.

ys: Was ist Tripsichore Yoga?

Lady Ruth THE TRIPSICHORE YOGA THEATER COMPANY began in 1979 as a company devoted to creating full length dance narratives. We explored a variety of stylistic forms includingpunk ballet, conventional modern dance and strict neo-classical technique. We used masks, performed with rock bands and did pop videos.
While yoga was always a part of our training, it wasn't until 1992 that we realised the expressive potential and choreographic viability of yoga postures. Once we began to devise works using yoga asanas, their extraordinary artistic logic became evident.
Surprisingly, it would seem that there has been no orthodox tradition for using yoga technique to create dances in the 5000 year history of the discipline. The postures intrinsically possess a sumptuous beauty and fluidity. They are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactly about these subjects in and of themselves. We are now many years into this experiment and each day brings new discoveries.

Edward ClarkAN OVERVIEW OF THE WORKSHOP WEEKEND: ADVANCING YOUR PRACTICE WITH SIR EDWARD CLARK IN BERLIN
After kicking off his first visit to Berlin with a breathtaking life performance of the Tripsichore theatre followed by a yoga philsophy lecture and talk, the series of four yoga asana workshops with Sir Edward Clark in Berlin is dedicated to strategies for improving your yoga practice - to understanding how to be your own teacher and how to get more out of your regular classes. Each workshop will include a section on Pranayama and Philosophy - not as separate subjects, but as material that is integral to making your practice grow.
What does it take to move your practice forward? How do you start working on and refining challenging material? Usual answers would consider looking at postures that you find challenging and this could be material that you are already good at as well as that which you find difficult. Both can deepen a practice. A deeper practice isn't just about harder postures though. Rather, it is also the quality with which you perform them. For the full experience, it is strongly recommended to book the complete workshop weekend. While the workshops are structured to be taken as a complete workshop weekend intensive, we all know the time restraints of living in a modern city which is why we are opening up the weekend for the booking of indivdual workshops and Edward very much welcomes individual drop-ins and will take their special needs in consideration when teaching.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS DESCRIPTIONS & TIMES:

Fri. 9.3.2012, 20-22.00:
THE LAST BREATH & THE TRANSITORIAL AND THE ETERNAL -
A LIFE PERFORMANCE OF THE TRIPSICHORE YOGA THEATER FOLLOWED BY A YOGA PHILOSOPHY LECTURE BY EDWARD CLARK

"THE LAST BREATH" is a life performance of the Tripsichore Yoga Theater Company. It combines the lyricism of dance with the spirituality of yoga in a Cirque d'Soleil-type performance. You don't want to miss a chance to see this cool show! The play is centered around an intense story of the final breath of a woman and her post-death experience.

Tripsichore uses yoga to create theatrical works and finds that the postures used in a vinyasa fashion are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactly about these subjects in and of themselves.

The London-based troupe's gravity-defying flow of yoga-inspired shapes has been acclaimed world-wide: "Tripsichore's performances combine the lyricism of dance with the spirituality of yoga in a Cirque du Soleil-type performance.", "The performances exude power and passion, while simultaneously creating a focused stillness that is awe-inspiring", "Tripsichore's lithe bodies entwine elegantly, flip over effortlessly and balance daringly. The performers' physical control is awesome."

"THE TRANSITORIAL AND THE ETERNAL - Right Action and Right Knowledge in the Bhagavad Gita" is a lecture and talk on yoga philosophy that Sir Edward Clark will hold following the Tripsichore Theater play on Friday night:

The aim of yoga is to attempt to "experience" and "know" the unfathomable and inexpressible nature of the universe or to at least assume that this is possible. The techniques for doing this are many, but involve either a sublimation or destruction of the individual's identification with personality and, through that process, experience that they are something much greater than the personality.
These techniques might range from severe austerities or to sitting peacefully and chanting or to performing acts of kindness or duty without self interest. However, one of the oldest and most esteemed techniques is pursuit of knowledge and wisdom through experimentation, observation and analysis.
The yoga aspirant must contend with the idea that the experience we have of life with its range of personal joys and sorrows is something that cannot be clung to for it is transitory and that there is some kind of ever enduring peace or happiness that is extremely difficult to apprehend, but which offers perfect freedom. The finite is transitory and the infinite is enduring. To come to a place of knowing this, we start with the physical world and through experimentation, observation and analysis begin to glean the things which are transitory in the attempt to discover what is eternal.
Yet, this philosophic process must also consider that endless duration makes "good" no better and that it is also wise to appreciate things even though they may be transitory.
How do you make sense of such philosophic considerations whilst on the mat?
At present, there are two essential models (with innumerable variants) – the "Stillness" model wherein one seeks to bring the body, mind and breath into a place without flux and a "Movement" model wherein evenness is equated with that which stillness presupposes. In contemporary practice, while stillness has been a yoga orthodoxy for possibly several millennia, yoga is today done with a strong emphasis on movement…both while in asana and while getting into and out of it. The ascendancy of asana has not necessarily brought about a deep understanding of the nature of the Absolute, but it has succeeded in putting the question on the table. (It has, of course, also brought about many other benefits dealing with a range of things like health and lifestyle). But, while contemporary yoga has tabled the question, its results have been equivocal at best and seems to lack clear methodology for bringing about an appreciation for the Absolute.

Sat. 10.03.2012, 10-13.00 - TRIPSICHORE YOGA ASANA WORKSHOP I:
DEVOTION AND DISCIPLINE - How the intention of the yogi clarifies
concentration in vinyasa and asana

One of the core ideas of yoga practice is the development of concentration
towards a singularity (eka grata). This Tripsichore yoga asana workshop looks at how, in a physical practice, one endeavours to dedicate the entirety of one's being to a single thing. In so doing, the subjects of dharma, dharana, and dhyana
will be examined and practised within the context of asana and vinyasa
practice.

Sat. 10.03.2012, 14.00-17:00 - TRIPSICHORE YOGA ASANA WORKSHOP II:
MOVING WITH UJJAYI BREATH AND MOVING FROM THE MULA - What is the most you can do with the least effort?

Pranayama is energy manipulation played out through the postures. This yoga asana workshop explores the idea that it is possible to raise an energy known variously as kundalini, shakti or prana through the specific use of ujjayi
pranayama in vinyasa movement.

Sun. 11.03.2012, 10.00-13:00 - TRIPSICHORE YOGA ASANA WORKSHOP III:
OVERCOMING FEAR AND OTHER OBSTACLES - Unusual Asanas and Balances

There are postures we love to do and others we are not so fond of - some
come to one with apparent ease and others are approached with a degree of
dread. Yoga philosophy encourages, through action, the appreciation and
awareness of the "present moment" without attachment to the outcome. Fear
and other obstacles tend to be based on projections into the future or past.
To overcome these tendencies, one identifies the fear or obstacle and
strategises to confront them.

Sun. 11.03.2012, 14.00-17:00 - TRIPSICHORE YOGA ASANA WORKSHOP IV:
BACK BENDS DON'T HURT - Finding ease in the extreme

One of the glories of physical practice is the grace of the backbend. But,
the extremity of this movement is not regularly encountered in daily life.
To execute these movements safely is a matter of technical exactitude which
should be practised by those who find it easy to do and by those for whom is
a daunting prospect. This is a workshop that will look at how to achieve
extreme back bending in a safe way.

THE PRESS ON SIR EDWARD CLARK & TRIPSICHORE:
"For the past 15 years [Tripsichore] has developed its own unique brand of asana...the practices are a joy to watch and, along with the workshops, a treasure trove of intriguing ideas." — Richard Rosen, Yoga Journal---

"Edward Clark, a student of yoga since 1978 and founder of the UK-based Tripsichore performance group (www.tripsichore.com), reveals to the public for the first time the Tripsichore Yoga techniques that have dazzled onlookers for decades." — Sara Avant Stover, FitYoga Magazine---

"Even when they are linking together spectacular poses, such as lifting from wheel in handstand to arching variations of handstand to wheel again, or in more simple movements, it is the smooth and watery transitions that create beauty." — Felicia M. Tomasko, LA Yoga Magazine---

"...Edward Clark makes magic and entertains... The awe-inspiring virtuoso on the first disc could absorb anyone... Clark is like the jazz musician of Surya Namaskar, always mixing up the notes, revivifying those who are ready for the challenge." — Molly Roemer, Yogi Times---

"...Edward has deliberately made the practice sequences quite challenging to give people an opportunity to investigate their real potential by trying things they otherwise might never do. Challenging they are. Even the Simple series would be a bit of a reach for most intermediate yoga students, except for those who have an athleticism that combines considerable strength, flexibility and balance. Growing in complexity from strongly intermediate to highly advanced, the sequences all start manageably with a basic sun salutation that has some distinctive Tripsichore movements, such as arm circles in extended forward bend. But in the Regular and Plus sequences, Edward and Eileen really begin to take you into some complex and difficult movements and postures. Tripsichore's techniques are likely to take you beyond your current beliefs about physical, mental and energetic limitations--and perhaps to a deeper realization of the unity and flow of life." – Tim Noworyta, Yoga Chicago ---

Rodney Yee RODNEY YEE, who has been practicing yoga for 30 years and teaching for 25, got his foundation from Iyengar Yoga. He continues his studies together with his wife, Colleen Saidman-Yee. Thirty DVDs and two books later, he has turned his yoga passion toward health care by cochairing the Urban Zen Health and Wellness Foundation, founded by Donna Karan.

Rodney has been curious about the mind and body for as long as he can remember. He was a gymnast, a ballet dancer with the Oakland Ballet Company and the Matsuyama Ballet Company of Tokyo, and a philosophy and physical therapy major at the University of California Davis and Berkeley.

Following the thread of curiosity about mind and body, he took his first yoga class in 1980. He went to yoga in search of flexibility and found a practice that would turn into his life-long passion and career. In 1981, Rodney began to study yoga full time at the San Francisco Iyengar Yoga Institute and at The Yoga Room in Berkeley. In 1987, after becoming a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, he opened the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, CA, with Richard Rosen and Claire Finn. Rodney still teaches at Piedmont Yoga Studio often, but he is now based in New York, and teaches regular classes at his wife Colleen's studio, Yoga Shanti, in Sag Harbor, NY.

In addition to teaching public classes in Sag Harbor and Oakland, Rodney leads teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats nationally and internationally, many of them with Colleen. Rodney has been teaching Advanced Yoga Teacher Training courses at studios across the country for over 15 years, and has directed numerous in-depth (18-month) teacher training programs. He and Colleen have led yoga retreats in locations such as Northern California and upstate New York, Hawaii, Mexico, Bali, Bhutan, and many other venues.

Rodney has appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America, and in the PBS special "The Practical Power of Yoga," as well as many other television broadcasts. He contributes to a variety of yoga and healthy lifestyle publications regularly, including Yoga Journal, Self, Shape, and Fitness, and has been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Marie Claire, Elle, O-The Oprah Magazine, New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.

Rodney created and appears in over 30 video titles and numerous audio recordings produced by Gaiam, and has written two books, Yoga: The Poetry of the Body (St. Martins, 2002) and Moving Toward Balance (Rodale, 2004), both with Nina Zolotow.

Rodney and Colleen are the Yoga Directors of the Health and Wellness Initiative of the Urban Zen Foundation, Donna Karan's project to change the healthcare paradigm to include complementary healthcare practices. As part of this project, they are the core yoga faculty of the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program, a 500-hour program that is currently training close to 100 integrative therapists in five modalities – yoga therapy, aromatherapy, reiki, contemplative end-of-life care, and nutrition. In association with Rodney, Colleen, and Gaiam, the Urban Zen Health and Wellness Initiative has produced DVDs and CDs for hospitals that lead patients through in-bed movements, restorative postures, breath awareness techniques, and body-scan meditations.

Rodney relies strongly on his own practice and intuition to influence his teaching. His core group of friends, everyday students, and family are also resources for a bounty of insights. His strengths are his communication skills, his sequencing finesse, and his ability to break down postures into their essential elements.

Rodney practices and teaches yoga to bring philosophy into action and to unveil the natural beauty of our spirits. He loves the ability of yoga to cleanse the mind and body which allows for presence of being.

Rodney and Colleen are married and live together in Long Island, NY, where they are raising and being raised by four awesome children, Evan, Adesha, Rachel, and Johanna.

Colleen Saidman-Yee COLLEEN SAIDMAN-YEE has been teaching yoga for 13 years. She owns and directs Yoga Shanti in Sag Harbor, NY, and continues her studies with her husband, Rodney Yee. Her passion for working in health care started in junior high at a geriatric center and continues today as cochair of the Urban Zen Health and Wellness Foundation.

Colleen's introduction to yoga was at the urging of a roommate who convinced her to attend a class at a loft space in New York City. It was not long after that first class, that her worn out running shoes, her basketball and her boxing gloves became relics of the past. And in 1994, after enduring back surgery, Colleen's commitment to her yoga practice deepened.

A graduate of Jivamukti's Teacher Training program in 1998, she has been teaching ever since. Colleen has been featured in Vanity Fair, New York Times, USA today, New York Magazine, Oprah, Marie Claire, Allure, and has been on the cover of yoga journal, fit yoga and natural health. Colleen is featured in the PBS special called The Practical Power of Yoga. She has also been a guest on the Good Morning America Show. She is co-writing the masters class column for yoga journal for 2009. A consummate student, Colleen's thirst for yoga knowledge is insatiable. Colleen has taught several teacher trainings, both 500 and 200 hour programs. Colleen holds a certification in Shiatsu and lived in Calcutta, India working with Mother Theresa at the Homes for the dying destitute.

Colleen owes tremendous gratitude for her studies of bhakti and vinyasa to David Life and Sharon Gannon. She studies with Richard Rosen and Richard Freeman as frequently as possible. She also offers thanks to the many other teachers with whom she has studied, as well as to her husband Rodney Yee, who remains her principal teacher.

Together with Rodney, she presents the Gaiam Yoga Studio as well as several popular Yoga DVDs. In recent years, they helped to create and now co-direct Urban Zen's Integrative Yoga Therapist Program, a world-wide initiative of Donna Karan. Colleen lives in Sag Harbor where she is the director of the famous Yoga Shanti yoga studio. She and Rodney are raising four wonderful teenagers, and are teaching Yoga Teacher Trainings and retreats worldwide.

Edward ClarkAN OVERVIEW OF THE WORKSHOP WEEKEND:
YOGA WITHOUT STRUGGLE with Rodney Yee & Colleen Saidman-Yee
How do we begin to let go of the constant tug of war between who we are in the present moment and the ideas and expectations we hold for ourselves? How do we release a yoga practice that is full of desires in order to come to our mat with the innocent eyes of amazement and joy?
This intensive workshop weekend with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman-Yee is your opportunity to experience yourself as the unfolding miracle you are and utilize your yoga practice as a means to help you see everything with more clarity. Rodney and Colleen invite you to spend a weekend with them in Berlin practicing yoga without struggle in the form of asana, pranayama, and meditation. All levels are welcome and will be addressed appropriately. For the full experience, it is strongly recommended to book the complete workshop weekend. While the workshops are structured to be taken as a complete workshop weekend intensive, we all know the time restraints of living in a modern city which is why we are opening up the weekend for the booking of indivdual workshops and Rodney and Colleeen very much welcome individual drop-ins and will take their special needs in consideration when teaching.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS DESCRIPTIONS & TIMES:

Fri. 27.4.2012, 18.30-22.00:
YOGA WITHOUT STRUGGLE: THE END OF AN INTERNAL CONFLICT

This workshop with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidmann-Yee introduces you to Rodney's and Colleens concept of yoga without struggle through an intelligently sequenced practice of asana, pranayama, and meditation. Learn how it is possible to see yourself as a miracle that is unfolding and to utilize your yoga practice as a method to see clearly.

Sat. 28.04.2012, 10-12:30:
HOW TO INTEGRATE AND SEQUENCE YOUR ASANA PRACTICE WITH PHILOSOPHY, PRANAYAMA AND MEDITATION

The asana practice can illuminate all eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. Through deep concentration and awareness of alignment, both through the bones and the pranic body, one hones the mind to be able to focus on the subtle movements of our aliveness. This concentration leads to awareness where we are equally aware of our internal movements as well as how they inter relate with the external vibrations. This dance of observation and response are the very ingredients which allow us to live authentically and responsibly in the world. As the body and breath become even, the path to deep silence becomes clear. Begin to understand that yoga is based on balance, not stretching. Through a variety of postures strung together in a special sequence, your body opens up to easy complete breathing. As the mind is attentive to the natural breath, it moves toward silence.

Sat. 29.04.2012, 14.00-16:30:
GROUNDING TO TURN INWARDS

Sequencing from standing poses to forward bends is an art that needs to be refined and mastered. To find the grounding principles of standing poses and then to translate them into seated forward bends provides a formula for injury free and tension releasing forward bends. It is often through forward bends that we find a pathway to the 5th limb of Astanga Yoga, Pratyahara, withdrawal of the senses. Turning inwards is so valuable in our daily life and acts as a sanctuary to our demanding world.

Sun. 29.04.2012, 10.00-12:30:
EFFORTLESS BACKBENDS

Open yourself up to the creative unknown present moment with an awesome backbending sequence. As we connect to the earth, we gain the necessary foundation to fearlessness. This is the beginning to a profound expansion of the heart chakra, which provides deep acceptance of the world as it is. Our innate creativity hinges on our connectivity to the world at large, and it is our creativity that gives wings to our joy. This class is for everyone and will be both vigorous and refined. Mostly asana.

Sun. 29.04.2012, 14.00-16:30:
WRING IT OUT, OPEN IT UP AND CONTAIN IT

Twists to backbends and then to forward bends will be the basic template we will use to explore emptiness. Twists help us cleanse our vital organs and juice up all the disks of the spine. Backbends access and ground the heart chakra, and forward bends will seal the exploration inward. This sequence will bring you to a profound emptiness that will let you be full of the present moment. This emptiness is the field of infinite possibilities and is the source of endless creativity.

Sun. 29.04.2012, 17.30-20.00:
THE ART OF SEQUENCING FOR SPECIAL POSES & STRUGGLE-FREE YOGA- A workshop for yoga students and teachers of all styles of vinyasa yoga

The order and timing of yoga poses is crucial to the overall effect on the mind-body. The different effects one can have from a practice are nuanced and limitless. By learning basic classical sequencing and then combing that knowledge with intuition and acute listening, one can open up even the toughest blocks. Learning how to breakdown the essential components of any pose reveals which postures lead up to a desired pose and in what order to place them. There are also important principles to learn and explore that make sequencing safe and effective. We will theorize, practice, and analyze numerous sequences and explore how to use these basic sequences as templates for further creative sequencing. We will also learn how to sequence for a balanced practice, one that is a perfect foundation for pranayama and meditation. Come and join Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman-Yee for an immersion into the infinite and creative universe of the art of sequencing.

Anja KühnelBIO ANJA KÜHNEL
Anja is the director of Jivamukti Yoga Berlin and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher.

She discovered her passion for Jivamukti Yoga in 2000 while living in New York during a court internship. Back then, she also met her teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life for the first time. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew right after her first Jivamukti class, where she belongs.

Anja teaches at the Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Center and is regularly invited as guest teacher worldwide.

Dechen ThurmanBIO DECHEN THURMAN
He's the brother of Uma and the son of Robert. He played Guildenstern in Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" movie and Patrick Bateman in Gerald Fox' Bret Easton Ellis film. But more importantly, his unique form of bodywork - as in Yoga and massage - has won international praise in the last couple of years.

Dechen is a holistic healer based in New York City. He is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher at the New York Jivamukti Yoga School as well as a Certified Ohashiatsu Instructor. Dechen creates a delicious sense of playfulness in his yoga classes. His method of healing is derived from these revered schools.

Last summer, more than 200 yogis in one of the biggest Open-Air Yoga classes at the Berlin Yoga Festival were hooked by his teachings (despite the fact that Germany played the semi-final of the soccer world cup at the same time; cf. the article in the German Vital magazine here). This year, he is invited, among others, to teach at the New York Yoga Journal Conference, the Yoga Conference Germany and the Wanderlust Yoga Festival.

Growing up, Dechen's family was a multicultural pioneer in hosting such luminous Tibetan refugee scholars as Geshe Wangyal, Lama Govinda, Tara Tulku Rimpoche, Dr. Yeshe Donden and Gehlek Rimpoche. A paramount time in Dechen’s life as he learned to cultivate his meditation practice with the help of these brilliant scholars. He first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age seven in Dharamsala, India.

Dechen's first taste of Jivamukti Yoga came at the age of nineteen. His dance teacher at Playwrights Horizons, Maude Karlsonn (nicknamed the "Swedish Mistress of Pain" by classmates), gave him a flier with a photo of Sharon Gannon in side crow position and told him to go to 2nd ave. and practice there. It was love at first class. He frequently attended class, initially as a warm-up for acting rehearsals, later for refuge from the pressures of his identity. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism. Many inexplicably good things would happen to him on such a punctual basis associated with Jivamukti that his life literally depended on it. The psychospiritual investigation that Jivamukti stimulated was fundamental to his success in acting and massage. Alongside his work as a Jivamukti Yoga teacher and healer, Dechen is an accomplished actor in film and theater. He has appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Hamlet, Zoolander and Gods and Generals.

Anja KühnelTHE RETREAT CENTER:
Located in a peaceful valley right atop Turkey's spectacular "Turquoise" coast, Huzur Vadisi is only 40mins from Dalaman International airport and only 10mins to the great beaches. The solar powered eco-resort is a true sanctuary offering delicious Turkish homegrown vegan food, a natural stone pool and the great outdoors.

Huzur Vadisi, which means "valley of eternal peace", is the name of the old olive-growing farmstead that has been restored and extended to provide the facilities you'll find there today. Nestled at the foot of a mountain, it is surrounded by beautiful virgin pine forests. No other people live in the valley, so the peace is profound. The only sounds you will hear are cicadas, the call of owls, and the heavenly song of nightingales. At night the valley is dark, free of light pollution, revealing all the beauty of the night sky. At full moon it is truly magical to see the forest and valley bathed in moonlight. Huzur Vadisi's setting brings a deep connection with the natural world that immeasurably enhances the benefits of our yoga practice.

In between the two daily Jivamukti yoga classes you will find enough time to relax by the fresh swimming-pool, pamper yourself with a full body or Ohashiatsu massage, wander in the valley property, or enjoy the beautiful crystal clear beaches and sea shores which are only ca. 10min drive away. Plus you will just love the great local vegan Turkish cusine that we will be served. Mainly organic or regional Turkish farm products, extremely delicious!

For more information, check out the retreat center's website by clicking here.
