PRATYAHARA: WHERE WE PUT OUR ENERGY

Yama-niyama-āsana-prāṇāyāma-pratyāhāra-dhāraṇā-dhyāna-samādhayo'ṣṭāvaṅgāni.

Restraint, Observance, Seat, Breath Control, Sense Withdrawal, Concentration, Mediation and Ecstasy are the eight limbs of Yoga.
—Patanjali's Yoga Sutras II.29

In the practice of pratyahara, one of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, we draw the senses inward to bring attention to the inner world instead of expending energy exclusively on the outer world. What we perceive in the outer world is just one part of our whole consciousness. Pratyahara provides a bridge from the outer practices of yama, niyama, asana and pranayama (from the gross) to the inner practices of dharana, dhyana and samadhi (to the subtle). The energy freed from focusing outward, freed of the desire to act and to collect information can be wisely channeled instead to the realization of who we really are, which is pure consciousness.

Where do we put our energy most of the time? We give our precious attention to the outside world, invariably, through identification with sensory inputs as well as identification with conditioned personality. For example, take our self-image, how we want to present ourselves to the world. How do I look? How do people see me? How do I want to be perceived? This kind of behavior exhausts a lot of our energy throughout the day. Pratyahara, as a practice, doesn't mean that we shouldn't take care of ourselves or that we shouldn't embrace beauty. It means to be aware of how much attention we give the outer image and to reduce the energy wasted in creating it. Satsang is a potent and helpful yoga practice in this regard. To be surrounded by people who are interested in yoga and self-realization instead of sticking to a carefully crafted outer image supports us to liberate ourselves from false identification.

To be able to turn the focus inward we need to minimize outer disturbances to the extent possible. What do we feed our minds all day? Information from news media, television, emails, social media, magazines and advertising, all of which trigger our emotions and tell us what we need next. What is our strategy to deal with all this information? Some may turn to alcohol, drugs and gossip. We talk and think more in an effort to digest all that input. Unfortunately, it only makes things worse. We should rather make an effort to calm our mind! We have to be able to digest what happens to us and everything that we say and think and do. Choose that which gives you less new things to deal with. As a practice, write down what distracted you during the asana or mediation. What made concentration difficult? By putting it into words you can realize what you are chewing on while you wanted to focus on something higher than your daily distractions. Then you start getting a sense of what is really important to you and what kind of external sensory input you would like to minimize.

To understand what is happening during the process of pratyahara, for me the philosophy of Samkhya is very helpful. We get an exact breakdown of how the human being functions, what has an influence on our behavior and how we perceive the world. We all know our five senses, referred to in Sanskrit as buddhendriyas. There are also the karmendriyas or "senses of action" (talking, grasping, moving, eliminating and procreating). These are almost always immediate, unconsciousness, automatic, spontaneous, and learned reactions to the sensations. I see something I like, for example, a brownie. For others, it would be a cigarette, a steak, a sexy person or a new pair of shoes. I see the brownie, I want to have the brownie and my hand grasps the brownie. To understand why we act like we do, we need to observe the connection between sensation, mind and action. Then we have the chance to change something. Being aware of what drives us to action makes it easier to let it go and calms down our lives. Conscious behavior reduces distraction and increases the ability to concentrate. Focusing inward we discover the three parts of our mental activity. The dominant parts are the thinking part, the mind (manas) and the part having an opinion, our ego (ahamkara). The pure observing component (buddhi) is slightly hidden, but always present. Through training the mind we can interfere and stop our prompt action. We then have time to reflect and act consciously. Do I need the brownie? Am I hungry? Do I need more sweets? What did I eat all day? What are the ingredients? What are the consequences for me and for others? Does my action lead to more suffering of others? What are my ethical and moral beliefs? How do I want to act, instead of just react? Addressing these questions will lead to different behaviors, which are based on a freely made decision, with hopefully less ego involved. Selfless and nonviolent behavior reduces the dominance of the ego and brings more peace to the world and to the mind.

A practical aspect of the training of the mind is to observe things consciously like a witness. Practice observing without judgments, without words, just watching. For example, watch thoughts arising during the Yoga Practice. We don't have to stick with the thoughts, we don't have to describe them and we even don't have to think about where they come from. We can realize this is the mind thinking a thought, and let go of the thought. This will bring us closer to the buddhi, our intelligence, which allows realizing the higher Self, which is pure consciousness.

The practice of pratyahara shows us, how much influence the culture has, the outer circumstances, our experiences, our personal behaviors and characteristics and, of course, our preferences and antipathies. Going inward reveals a sophisticated vision of our entire consciousness. The ego -- or better the "maker of our small self" -- can be identified and eliminated, revealing the buddhi, a clear and free perception. As Sharon Gannon and David Life say in Jivamukti Yoga: Practices for Liberating Body and Soul, "Through pratyahara we can journey from the outer fixation to inward revelation."

Such dir etwas, was dir weniger Neues zu verarbeiten gibt.

With their Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga" (also translated into German, Russian & Italian), "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism", "Cats and Dogs are People, too!", "Simple Recipes for Joy", Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Sharon Gannon David LifeSHARON GANNON started her quest for liberation upon her birth on July 4th in Washington, DC. Sharon views art as a means for uplifting the soul and her artistic pursuits enriched the community by educating and inspiring. In 1984 she shifted her main focus from the performing arts to teaching yoga in the hope of giving practical methods that would benefit people more directly and immediately. Sharon has studied yoga since 1976 with many teachers around the globe, most notably with Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalanada, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Shankarananda, Shyam Das and Bhagavan Das. She brings a rare blend of scholarly study, artistic pursuits and a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her offerings as a teacher.

DAVID LIFE: Bios are hard for me to digest. The idea that a picture could be painted of me with some little list of factoids is untenable. The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers. Sometimes I like to read bios because it tells me things about a person that I didn't know and to that end, here is a list of all the significant jobs that have come my way over the past 60 years, in order: Lawnmowing and snowshoveling, Paper delivery, Beer and Wine store stockboy, Forklift driver in Corrugated box company, Phone order taker, Dishwasher, Cafeteria manager, Welder in Steel MIll, Apartment building super, Silk screen production and designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Artist, Poet, Life Cafe owner, Yoga teacher, Bio writer!

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL has been a devoted student of Sharon Gannon and David Life since she first met them while temporarily living in New York. She has been directing the two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers and their Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training program since 2008. After 15 years of study with Sharon and David, Anja is more than grateful for all she has learned and all that she is still going to learn. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. She teaches at her two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin. She has also been a regularly invited to mentor at the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings and co-faclitates the June 2017 Costa Rica Jivamukti Teacher Training together with David Life and Rima Rabbath.

Everyone is talking about Sharon & David's Jivamukti Yoga method….
“Sharon Gannon und David Life who founded their own yoga method called Jivamukti Yoga in the late 80ies and, with it, made Yoga for the first time ever socially acceptable for western urban dwellers. Among their students are Sting, Madonna, Christy Turlington and basically all other non-overweight famous american actors and musicians. Many speak about them as Gurus. With their mixture of old Indian tradition and modern lifestyle like rock music they were the ones who were majorly responsible for the Yoga boom, which from New York has long spilled over to Germany: Three million Germans are said to regularly practice Yoga these days ... in Berlin-Mitte it appear to be two million alone.'
--Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Germany
"David Life looks like Iggy Pop, is widely tatooed, has an incredible power in his stringy tiny arms and the great luck to have a woman on his side who has a delphine blue streak in her black hair and who is radiating a mild wisdom that makes one want to start crying immediately as soon as she opens her mouth. With their headsets, the two contrive to get every hall to boil.... – Oh My Guru!"

“David and Sharon have inspired and encouraged us to think of yoga not just as a system of exercises but also as a door to the infinite.”
--Sting
"It has the full package, more than just exercise. I always learn something at Jivamukti; they really educate the students."
-- Christy Turlington

Wild Woodstock Retreat

OUR LOCATION FOR THE YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS:
Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life open part of their home in Woodstock, NY (USA) for this special retreat. Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary which also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all yoga classes and events of this retreat will be held.

The Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary is a magical 125-acre sanctuary established in 2003 and located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains near Woodstock in upstate New York (about 2 hours north of New York City and 3.5 miles from downtown Woodstock).

The Sanctuary serves as a safe haven and unpolluted habitat for diverse plant and animal communities, including white tail deer, black bear, foxes, porcupines, possums, raccoons, turkeys, as well as a large variety of wild birds, fish, snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In present culture, the word wild is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized," but the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others." The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness—to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully.

Sharon Gannon often teaches that we can have anything we want so long as we are willing to provide it to others first. She and David Life live that teaching by having established and by maintaining the Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary, which is the country ashram for the Jivamukti Yoga School.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

YOUR ACCOMMODATION DURING THIS RETREAT will be provided in handpicked high quality properties/houses in the Woodstock area. All houses are shared (2 to 5 twin/double or single rooms in one property), i.e. you will share a common living area, a fully equipped self-catered kitchen and 1 to 3 bathrooms with up to 4-10 other retreat participants (depending on the size of the house, number of single rooms booked etc.). All properties and rooms are individual with their special treats so it is hard to compare them. We also offer a number of optional upgrades to the standard accommodation to better suit your individual requirements. Check registration form for details.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

BOARD DURING THIS RETREAT: All houses come with well equipment self-catered kitchens and are strictly vegan, i.e. no diary, egg or meat products may be brought into any of the houses.  The idea of this retreat is to also create a Satsang experience by cooking together delicious vegan meals in groups of likeminded vegan yogis. All houses will be equipped with a copy of Sharon Gannon’s cookbook “Simple Recipes for Joy”. For days/nights out, there are also some very nice vegan restaurants in Woodstock.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

BEING WILD, the underlying theme of this first of its kind retreat, in present culture, is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized". But the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others". The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness - to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully. Reaching this state actually requires the oposite of "chaos" and "disorganization": A regular intensive yoga practice, not only asana wise but also by studying the other legs of yoga and having satsang with other like minded yogis and most importantly, your teachers.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

This is why we have designed this one of a kind Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreat in Woodstock in order to provide you the opportunity to immerse for up to two weeks in intensive dalily study and practice right from the source with the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method. Every morning of this retreat, Sharon Gannon and/or David Life will teach a 4 hour intensive Jivamukt Yoga workshop from 10am to 2pm (ca. 3 hour asana practice and ca. 1 hour yoga philosophy teachings). These workshop style morning classes will be complemented by daily 2hour Jivamukti Yoga Open XL classes with Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel and occassionally also other international Jivamukti Yoga teachers in the late afternoon and, occasionally Satsangs, Kirtans and other special events with Sharon Gannon, David Life, Anja Kuehnel and other presenters.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Special Bonus Events: Approximately 1-2 times per week, we hope to offer special events in the late afternoon/evening, such as Satsangs or Kirtans or Yoga Philosophy lectures with Sharon Gannon, David Life and other presenters, which in some cases due to time constraints will be offered INSTEAD of the afternoon Open XL class (i.e. sometimes no Open XL class on special events days). Once during each of the two weeks of this retreat, we invite you to a Karma Yoga session to benefit the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary area. Exact daily schedule TBA at the retreat venue.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Please note for your planning: On the arrival days there is NO morning class nor Q&A conference with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life, i.e. the first class on your arrival day is the afternoon class with Anja. This also applies if your arrival day is August 20 even though Sharon and David teach on this day in the morning, as this class is only for the people who also booked Part I of the retreat. On August 19 and 27 (final days), there is no evening class with Anja, last class on August 19 and 27 is the morning workshop with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life from 10am-2pm. If you booked both weeks, August 19 in the evening and August 20 in the morning provides a welcome opportunity to take "a day off" and explore Woodstock and its surroundings. For instance, you could visit Ananda Ashram or the Farm Sanctuary. Or go swimming.

As normal with renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life, the practice space included in this retreat strictly is the size of one regularly sized yoga mat (ca. 0,65x1,8m) only. All practice spots are marked and mats must be placed within the markers. You should bring your own yoga mat as there are only a limited number of rental mats. The yoga room has blankets and straps for your use. It also has a limited number of blocks. If you anticipate using blocks, please bring your own, as we cannot guarantee to have enough for everyone.

अों शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ।।

Accept us both together, protect us both together, may our knowledge and strength increase together, may we not resent each other.

Dear ones,

I am thanking all of you for making an effort to create the time and space to be together! We hold precious and dear in our hearts whatever we put our energy into. It is 100% up to us. Life is pulling us in all these different directions. It is wonderful that we are all meeting here at Sharon ji's and David ji's beautiful home and at the sanctuary they have created for the animals, plants and us human people, and that all of us together get the chance to immerse into our practice in this beautiful natural environment which is supporting us on all levels.
Let us put all of our love into what we do! Let us always remind each other that this is what truly matters in life. To uplift each other, to enjoy each other's company, to learn from each other, to see the beauty in each moment and to be grateful for the gift of life. Putting our prāṇa in what we truly care about: to be as natural and loving as one can possibly be, taking rest in our true nature, to truly be free and to serve with each breath.

लोका: समस्ता: सुखिनो भवन्तु ।।
May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Love.
Anja

▲▼ BIO AND MORE INFO ON ANJA KUEHNEL & MARTYNA EDER

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL
is director of the two Jivamukti Yoga Berlin centers and has been practicing and teaching Jivamukti Yoga for many years all over the world. Her inspiration comes from her teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life who opened up a way to access the yogic path and who made the ancient yogic techniques accessible and understandable in a modern, practical and relevant way by emphasizing the importance of a meaningful and mutually beneficial way of life with all of nature. It is the feeling of interconnectedness in one's own heart and the importance to deepen one's understanding through practice that inspires her every day as a student and teacher of yoga.

Anja especially is interested in the ancient yogic scriptures and vedantic teachings which offer a path to experiencing one's true nature as limitless and free by taking away all the limitations we have put upon ourselves.

In addition to her long time experience as a yoga teacher and yoga center director in Berlin, she is often teaching Jivamukti Yoga workshops worldwide and has been teaching Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreats worldwide for the past 7+ years, often in collaboration with internationally renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon, David Life, Manorama or Dechen Thurman.

Anja leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Yoga Apprenticeship Teacher Training program in Berlin and is regularly invited as faculty or board member to the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings and Jivamukti Advanced board tests. In June 2017, Anja will co-facilitate the 300-hour Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica together with Jivamukti Yoga co-founder David Life and Rima Rabbath (NYC).

Vera Christopeit MARTYNA EDER
is an 800hrs+ Advanced Certified Jivamukti Teacher and an actress. She graduated from the Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in Rhinebeck, New York, in 2011 and then apprenticed with her mentor Petros Haffenrichter. Since then, she has been teaching classes at Jivamukti Berlin and Jivamukti Munich as well as workshops and retreats all over the world. Martynas biggest inspiration is the tireless animal rights and environmental activism of her teachers, Sharon and David, which she makes her priority to pass on to her students by imparting a loving and compassionate behavior towards all living beings and by practicing nonviolence in thoughts, words and actions as the first- and most important step of all yoga practices. Martyna bows down in love and gratitude to her teachers Sharon Gannon, David Life, Petros Haffenrichter and Rolf Naujokat.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT CENTER AND ACCOMODATION

Anja KühnelTHE LOCATION:
Already for the 5th time in a row, we are returning to a very special and remote place right on a secluded private beach on the Atlantic, meaning that we can jump into the ocean directly after yoga and can take our meals right one the beach everyday.

Nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys of La Gomera, defined on both sides by hilly slopes, the finca expands down to a beach of 500 metres length.

It is an idyllic retreat with a magic of its own and many lively contrasts. There is the elemental force of nature – we are situated right by the Atlantic whose rushing waves make up the finca's "sound-track". In the morning, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea, in the evening the setting sun turns Mt. Teide on the neighbouring island Tenerife to gold – at 3718m it is Spain's highest mountain.

Italien

We will be staying in neatly restored old farmers' houses which were originally part of an old and remote banana plantation, that today has been converted to an organic farm which operates solely to provide the guests of the venue with fresh organic produce.

Italien

Surrounded by 10 hectars of organic plantation (actually the first recognized biological enterprise on La Gomera), most of the vegetables, herbs and fruits needed for feeding the guests are grown right on site. The hundreds of organically grown plants make sure that our fruit buffet is filled all year round with bananas, papayas, mangoes, mameys, dates, oranges, melons, avocados and strawberries – all these according to their different seasons. When the harvest surpasses the demand, juices and jams are produced.

We can eat outside during the entire retreat. One dining terrace is situated directly by the sea, the other one within the finca amongst mango trees and date palms. At mealtimes you help yourself to delicious dishes prepared by the Gomeran catering team with fresh products mainly from the Finca. Vegan dishes will be served throughout the week.

Italien

The vegetable garden supplies cucumber, tomatoes, courgettes, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, rucola, aubergines, pumpkins, green beans, red and green peppers, etc. More sensitive plants grow in our three large greenhouses.
This is only a small excerpt from the horticultural world of the finca. You can learn more about the history, the organisation, plants and trees on an optional botanical tour offered.

Italien

The best part, however, is the peaceful and remote location...the plantation can only be reached by boat or a 2 hour walk, which means that there are no roads, no hurry -- only the singing of birds, the whispering of the wind and the murmur of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Italien

The journey to the plantation, which with multiple boat rides is itself a lot of fun, easily affords time for reflection. Immerse yourself! Guests arrive and depart exclusively in our own launches – our workforce also travel in this manner. Since the only other way is a narrow path which leads hikers to San Sebastian in about 2 ½ hours we are protected from unbidden guests. There is no road access. This means, our guests and their children can move freely and safely around the large Finca. Because of its remote situation it has always been necessary to install all essentials. The development from plantation to holiday village has raised the standard but the self-sufficient character remained, on an equally high standard.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE OPTIONAL EXTENSION SEPT. 30 - OCT. 4

Italien

If you book the optional extension from Sept. 30-Oct. 4, we are moving locations on Sept. 30 to a beautiful secluded fishing village on La Gomera where we are staying in a house very close to a super-cool beach with a natural seawater pool. The whole scenery is like Planet of the Apes or the like could have been shot here. The group size is limited to much less students so we can work in a even more detailed, almost 1 on 1 way. Perfect to make use of the German bank holiday on Oct. 3.

Shared 3-bed apartment                                                       +495 EUR p.P.
shared beautiful apartment with 3 single beds and its own bathroom and kitchen

Shared 2-bed apartment                                                       +666 EUR p.P.
shared beautiful apartment with 2 single beds and its own bathroom and kitchen
Please inquire for single room/apartment options on the extension days.

As these optional extension days are also aimed at having some time to explore the island a bit more and/or to have some more time to relax, the group will decide on a day to day basis if there will be a 2nd class that day or whether we skip one of the daily classes. Food is also included for the extension days, HOWEVER, it will NOT be prepared buffet-style food.  Instead, if we are not on excursions, we as a entire group will cook and eat all our meals together as a group at our beautiful retreat headquarter house. This means JYB will buy and pay all groceries/food/drinks (vegan and non-alcoholic) needed to prepare delicious meals throughout the day, but there will be no designated cook nor maid onsite who will cook or do the dishes for us. So all retreat participants (teachers, students and staff alike) will do this together as a team effort and taking turns. Focus will be on fresh, tasty, healthy vegan food and we will bring Sharon Gannon's cookbook Recipes for Joy but everybody is welcome to come with their own recipe ideas. Preparing, offering and serving delicious food is a well known yoga practice in India and will form a integral part of this yoga retreat. If we are doing excursions/trips and stopping by a restaurant, everyone pays for their own restaurant bill.
